Rangers chase Panama midfielder

Recommended Posts

RANGERS are chasing Panama midfielder Anibal Godoy after Ally McCoist's spying mission last week.

The Ibrox boss jetted to Central America to watch the World Cup qualifier where Panama beat Honduras 2-0. The newly-crowned Third Division champions' manager went with No.2 Kenny McDowall to look at potential recruits.

And they have pinpointed 23-year-old defensive midfielder Godoy as their main target.

Godoy currently plays for Panama League outfit Chepo and is regarded as one of Panama's best players. They are the shock leaders of the CONCACAF section in the race to make Brazil 2014 â?? ahead of the likes of the USA and Mexico.

And 24-times capped Godoy impressed McCoist and McDowall in the match after an assured midfield display.

Godoy would be available for a cut-price fee, with Rangers able to buy players again from September. And the player would be keen on a move.

Hopefully signals a change in signing policy.

Buy young and cheap then sell for profit ala Porto.

just what we need in addition to Black, Hutton & Faure (and occasionally Jig)....

They should be looking at more creative midfielders....

Unless we are losing Faure, Black and Hutton.

I think many would happily see the back of all three.

Still can't work out Hutton as a player!

Reminds me of Edu a little bit: Looks like a football player one week, looks like a donkey dressed up as a football player the next.

Not sure about Hutton. Was a waste of space this season in 8 out 10 games he's played. If Macleod comes back, I see no reason to keep him on. Faure ... AFAIK, he's actually a centre-half who can play RB and defensive midfield. He's been shifted all over the place by Ally and IMHO he did not that badly in defensive midfield. Allowed Black to go forward like he did at Hearts. That Hutton and Black at times stood on his feet did not help him or provided him with any great option to play the ball forward.

The Panama-chap got some good reports, but honestly, how would the paper(s) know at whom McCoist and Co. looked that night? Asking the local taxi driver?

Gers boss Ally McCoist and No.2 Kenny McDowall watched the midfielder in action for his national team last week.

The 23-year-old, who has formerly played club football in Argentina, helped his country beat Honduras 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Panama City.

The Irn-Bru Third Division club, who will cap their wage bill at 33% of their turnover next season, are looking at the Central American market to strengthen.

And McCoist has been told that the 32-times capped player will have no difficulties adapting to life in Glasgow if he moves here in the summer.

Fernando Palomo commentates on football in Central and South America for ESPN and has seen the player in action for Panama on several occasions.

He said: "Anibal is more of a creative type than a holding midfielder. He likes to get the ball and push forward.

"The Panama national team likes to play with two wide players, as Rangers do, so he is well used to playing in a winger-based system.

"Panama have played the same set-up, always with a couple of wide players, for nearly a decade now. They have not deviated from that system at all.

"They have achieved some success in the Concacaf region playing that way in that time. Anibal is well used to pushing the ball out wide.

"Tactically, the players are not as advanced as in some other countries. But technically Panamanian players are very gifted. They are also very athletic."

Palomo can understand why Rangers are looking to Panama for new players and believes Anibal would succeed in Scotland if he signed.

He said: "Anibal is not the first Panamanian player to be linked with a move to Europe. In recent seasons, this has happened increasingly.

"Agents representing Romanian and Serbian clubs are increasingly coming to the country. Panama is an up-and-coming football nation.

"I am sure Rangers fans are sitting in pubs in Glasgow saying: 'Why are we trying to sign a player from Panama?'

"But it makes good sense for them to be looking at the Central American market. There is no risk involved as the players do not cost a great deal of money and are accomplished footballers.

"If they go to more developed football nations they pay more money for lesser quality players. Celtic have certainly achieved great success with Emilio Izaguirre from Honduras."

Meanwhile, defender Chris Hegarty has accepted a two-match ban for stamping on an opponent during his team's goalless draw at Montrose.

He will now sit out Sunday's game with Queen's Park and the meeting with Clyde on April 13.

Hegarty told the Gers website: "It's one that I just have to deal with but it wasn't malicious in any way and I didn't mean to hurt him."
