Rangers can't follow QoS route to success...........

Recommended Posts

the two clubs have entirely different goals

SOME may say Ally McCoist should follow Queen of the South's route to success next season - but there's no way you can compare the two clubs' ambitions.

THEYâ??RE a team who play in blue shirts and have romped to an SFL title. But donâ??t even try to compare Queen of the South with Rangers.

Itâ??s inevitable, isnâ??t it? People will pose the question: â??Why have a side with modest earners sealed the Second Division title quicker than Gers will the Third?â?

And â??if they can run away with that league having barely spent a penny why does Ally McCoist need major cash to ensure the Ibrox club do it next year?â?

But itâ??s not as simple as that.

The Doonhamers won the title on Wednesday by 27 points and with six games to spare. They have splashed out little and donâ??t have any superstars in their team.

Allan Johnston has done a terrific job putting that side together, which is made up of talented young players and a few â??journeymenâ? who know what itâ??s like to win championships in Scottish footballâ??s lower leagues.

So people will automatically say, â??Rangers can do the same next yearâ?. But thatâ??s nonsense. With

all due respect, Rangers are an entirely different entity to Queen of the South.

What are Queens building towards? Their ambition is to make it into the SPL and try to establish themselves in that league. Thatâ??s their ultimate goal.

But Alastair has to build a squad at Rangers who will be expected to win the SPL title in their first season back at the top. Thatâ??s a huge difference.

He has to have a team capable of playing Champions League football in a few yearsâ?? time.

Listen, if Alastair is getting flak this season for winning the Third Division can you imagine the abuse heâ??ll get if heâ??s in the SPL and struggling to hit the top six?

He can pop a journeyman into his side here and there in SFL2. But at the end of the day he needs a solid base which is prepared to challenge Celtic at the top of the SPL within a short space of time.

The last thing Rangers need is to get back to the SPL and realise youâ??ll need to spend £20million just to compete with your Old Firm rivals.

I realise the fans are frustrated right now. Theyâ??re not happy with the teamâ??s style. But Alastair has to be cut a bit of slack.

Aside from all the sanctions the club was hit with in the summer such as the transfer embargo, some players at the start of the season clearly thought they were better than what they are.

They couldnâ??t win a game away from home and for some reason it has taken them longer than expected to get their heads around where Rangers are. But letâ??s not kid anyone on here. It hasnâ??t been good enough and Alastair knows that. But anyone who thought Rangers would play free-flowing, attractive football this season is having a laugh.

I know the supporters are angry because theyâ??re watching part-time teams getting results against guys on good money.

But that doesnâ??t guarantee you every game will be won by playing silky soccer. There was absolutely no chance of that happening.

The real frustration for the punters should be that â?? from that first SFL3 game against Peterhead back in August it hasnâ??t improved greatly.

Ian Durrant was right during the week when he said if the kids canâ??t handle the pressure of playing for Rangers, they shouldnâ??t be at Ibrox.

Would some of these boys even be at the club if we werenâ??t in the Third Division? Iâ??d suggest not.

A couple have done themselves no harm, such as Lewis Macleod and Barrie McKay. But a lot of the others havenâ??t. Theyâ??ve missed a golden chance in their careers. And that goes for some of the senior players as well, by the way.

Alastair will be seething at how itâ??s panned out. No matter what anyone thinks, as a player, he was ultra-professional. He wants Rangers to be a proper club again which wins with a degree of style.

And it has to happen next season in the Second Division. Thatâ??s why the summer, and next January, will be the real test for him and his staff as they try to attract a better standard of player to Ibrox â?? and convince them to ply their trade in SFL2.

I definitely don't agree that our squad will be expected to win the title in the first season back at the top. That's just nonsense and anyone who really does expect that is just completely unrealistic. Hateley is also being unrealistic about how much investment in the squad will be required to compete for the SPL title. I sure hope Green & co save a large chunk of that IPO cash for an SPL return transfer kitty.
