Rangers starlet Barrie McKay: Winning SFL Division 3 will be unique triumph for club

Recommended Posts

THE youngster believes he has a chance to write his name into the Ibrox history books by helping the club to an unprecedented achievement.

RANGERS kid Barrie McKay canâ??t wait to write his name into the history books by wrapping up the Third Division title.

And he could live his dream as early as tomorrow if Gers beat Stirling Albion in the noon kick-off at Ibrox and closest challengers Queenâ??s Park slip up later in the afternoon at Annan.

The 18-year-old winger reckons he will become a hero by helping Rangers claim what will be a unique triumph.

With the Ibrox giants having to start afresh in the bottom tier after liquidation, this is a campaign that will probably never be repeated in their history.

So McKay knows every member of Ally McCoistâ??s title-winning squad will be remembered forever.

He said: â??To come through what we have in the past year and put our name in the record books would be great.

â??There has never been another team in Rangersâ?? history that has won the Third Division so to be part of a squad that does it would be something special. You always remember your first title and I have imagined it will be something extraordinary.

â??It is something the legends at this club have never done. It would be a first winnerâ??s medal for me and to able to say that I did that aged 18 is something special as well.

â??The problems the club went through have actually helped young players like me as we have been given a chance to play regularly and have taken it.

â??Weâ??ve played in a lot more games than we would have if we were still up in the SPL.

â??It has worked out well for us in that sense.â?

McCoistâ??s players have copped stick this season and Ibrox chief Charles Green infamously branded them the worst team in the clubâ??s history.

But McKay reckons the criticism is unfair and claims winning the title before Easter would be the perfect response to the snipers.

He said: â??The sooner we get the title won the better but it will still be a great achievement

for the club.

â??Our performances have been good this season but every club at every level suffers a dip in their consistency. We had a big win up at Elgin last weekend and that was a huge boost.

â??It was a game for going out and winning our battles and we did that.â?

The Ibrox kid has spent the week with Scotlandâ??s Under-19 side and scored the winner in Tuesdayâ??s 3-2 win over Sweden.

Heâ??s loving being part of the international set-up but admits Scotland duty might cost him a proper break in the summer.

McKay said: â??My pals have all booked their holidays but Iâ??ve told them to forget about me.

â??Our last Third Division match is on May 4 and then I have the elite round of qualifying for Scotland against Belgium, Georgia and England three weeks later.

â??If we win that the finals are in Lithuania in July so I may not get a holiday but I donâ??t mind. There is real competition for places with Scotland and you have to do well.â?

Get us back to the top league and win it, then you can call yourself a hero young Barrie.

I think he is entitled to celebrate the title, and he is correct,he will go down in the history books for his achievements this season

Oh he can celebrate all he wants, but lets keep the hero tag in the box for when its really needed.

but it's true :) and puts to shame the deserters who left us last year.

I thank him for staying not sure where he could've went but thanks anyway.

The thing is its a part time league we are about to win and young Barrie is making out it ranks up there with the clubs greatest achievements which is a little naive from the young man.

But each to their own all I want to do is get this season over and forget about it.

I'd say especially for the younger players as it's their first major trophy as a Rangers player no matter what league we are in just now, why wouldn't he/they be happy?

I can see your points but years from now this will be a major part of our history and I doubt many fans will want to forget like yourself. The football has been very poor of course it has but for the stats our name will be on the trophy.
