Rangers formation against Moscow Dynamo in 1972?

Recommended Posts

As a mere 36 year old laddie, the 1972 ECWC Final is a bit before my time and I've got a bear asking by email what formation the team had that day given we'd used a few different ones on the way to the final.

Any of our more mature members able to help...?

Cheers!

We did use 5-3-2 earlier in the competition according to some sites but who would have played where mate?

OK.. I'll have a go...and I have my older brother to thank.

McCloy... obviously in goals.

Jardine... attacking right back.

Mathieson... attacking left back.

Greig... Centre half.

Derek Johnstone...Centre half.

Dave Smith...Sweeper/Libero... Just in front of defence.

Conn. Midfield.

MacDonald. Midfield.

McLean. Midfield.

Johnston. Forward supporting main striker.

Stein. Main Striker.

So....it's a 5-3-2 or 3-5-2....but all players pretty adaptable to different positions. What a team!

I have the dubious pleasure of sitting in front of Dave Smith in the bus on the way to Ibrox every other week so I'll ask him for you on Saturday Frankie.

Lucky you, have to admit my jealousy ;)

I'm pretty sure we played a 4-4-2 with Stein and Johnston up front.

Dave Smith and Tommy McLean played a roving midfield roll with Alfie Conn and Alex McDonald supporting the attack as well as helping out the defence when needed.

I was only 16 at the time so the memory is a bit fuzzy but i'll concede that we may have played a 5-3-2 formation at some point but i think that would have been used in away legs.
