Rangers hope to sell advertising space.. on roof of their Murray Park training HQ

Recommended Posts

RANGERS want to turn the roof of their training HQ into a giant advertising billboard.

Chief executive Charles Green believes firms will be keen to buy the space â?? because it can be seen from planes arriving at and departing Glasgow airport.

We can reveal his latest money-making idea days after controversial plans to sell the naming rights to Ibrox infuriated fans.

The roof of the £14million Murray Park complex would give advertisers a potential audience of 20,000 people a day â?? the number of passengers who fly to and from the city.

And club executives are so keen on the idea, they have even discussed selling ad space on some of the surrounding pitches.

A club insider said: â??Weâ??re trying to think outside of the box and come up with new ways of generating money.

â??Basically, if it makes the club money, Charles Green will look at it.

â??Everyone thinks this idea is a good one and there is no real downside.

â??Itâ??s not been decided whether it will be club sponsors only or if he will open it up to anyone who wants the space.â?

The idea could be pitched at major brands such as the clubâ??s shirt sponsor Tennentâ??s and SportsDirect, who are owned by Ibrox investor Mike Ashley.

Yesterday, a Rangers spokesman confirmed the plan was being considered. He said: â??As long as itâ??s not a distraction to pilots, why not?

â??Charles Green has always said he is open to ideas that generate revenue for Rangers.â?

But advertising experts werenâ??t sure if the idea has wings.

Crawford Mollison, director at The Ad Shed in Perth, said: â??If you are flying over something, you are probably not going to see a great deal.

â??If a company were putting a message there, it would have to be very simple and large. Perhaps something like a Tennentâ??s logo or a big can of Irn-Bru.â?

Pete Martin, creative director at The Gate Worldwide, said: â??I think Santa would be the only real audience for something like that.

â??There would be a limited demand for it and, even then, there would only be space for a logo and nothing else.

â??Iâ??d think theyâ??d be lucky if anyone would pay low thousands for the space.â?

Greenâ??s money-making schemes have not always been popular with the Bears.

One group of fans protested against the stadium naming rights plan during the clubâ??s 3-0 victory over Annan Athletic on Tuesday.

But Green said: â??Thereâ??s more chance of the naming rights being sold than me being called Gladys Green, I can tell you that.

â??Iâ??ve said from day one that, providing it is legal, Iâ??ll do it to bring money into Rangers.

â??Iâ??m a Yorkshireman, Iâ??ve got big hands â?? God gave them to me so I can grab a lot of money

How do you know it's either of those things?

I don't know anything about what Green's thinking about this. What I do know is that he's getting down to desperate measures. I wouldn't give it a 2nd thought if I flew over the building.
