Sports Direct Arena Mk II! - Ibrox New Name?

Recommended Posts

MIKE ASHLEY’S plan to rename Ibrox the Sports Direct Arena is just one in a list of re-branding proposals being considered by Rangers chief executive Charles Green.

Newcastle owner Ashley has opened talks with Green over a possible multi-million pound sponsorship package that would see the famous old ground renamed to promote his sports retail firm.

Record Sport understands Ashley’s offer would see the club pocket an initial annual fee of £1.5million. But that sum could increase significantly depending on what division Rangers are playing in.

Ashley was forced into a U-turn by his own club’s fans who were furious when he turned St James’ Park into the Sports Direct Arena.

That name has since been dropped but now Ashley – who has already struck a deal with Green to sell Gers’ merchandise – plans a similar promotional stunt in Glasgow.

And the club confirmed last night there are other re-branding packages on Green’s desk.

A spokesman said: “It’s important to stress at this stage no decision has been taken about the possible renaming of Ibrox.

“A number of proposals have been put to the club and as Charles Green has said they’ll be considered if they are deemed to be to the benefit of the club.”

News of Ashley’s plan provoked a mixed reaction among fans torn between club tradition and the need to bring in new cash.

Rangers Supporters Trust spokesman Mark Dingwall said: “Rangers fans have been calling our stadium Ibrox for more than 100 years and will be calling it Ibrox for another 100 years to come.

“It’s important for clubs to explore new revenue streams so long as the commercial worth marries with historical values.

“It appears these type of naming deals are only successful when the stadia are new builds, such as the Aviva or Emirates.”

John MacMillan of the Rangers Supporters Association added: “It would leave a sour taste in the mouths of many supporters if the stadium is re-named but it will always be Ibrox to Rangers fans.”

Ashley is reportedly interested in buying a minority shareholding in Rangers. He faced a further naming outcry at Newcastle this season after a deal with payday loan company Wonga – but they announced to fans the name would revert to St James’ Park.
