Peter Lawwell thinks a European league could suit Celtic

Recommended Posts

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has reaffirmed Celtic's commitment to the SPL - for now.

He believes Uefa are open to some form of European regional leagues being created to bridge the financial gap between footballing nations.

"We are committed to the SPL but nothing stays the same," said Lawwell.

"Uefa have opened their mind up to some form of regional leagues. They recognise the polarisation between the top leagues and the smaller leagues."

Scandinavian countries, as well as the Belgian and Dutch leagues, were among those considered.

"Coming together to create bigger markets for media rights, they could try to close that gap," said Lawwell.

"Our job at Celtic is to maintain standards. We believe we are a top-class European football club in everything we do.

"Any changes in regard to the landscape of football in Europe, we would like to think we would be a part of that."

Lawwell was speaking at the club's AGM, where Celtic chairman Ian Bankier said Celtic could soon be in a "league of their own".

Bankier believes two or three successive years in the Champions League could see them attain a level no other Scottish club could match.

Meanwhile, manager Neil Lennon says he has a huge challenge in keeping his squad intact and expects "wolves at the door" in January.

I am quite concerned how this is all going to pan out, seriously I think that what is happening just now is escalating a big problem between Rangers fans and BHEAST fans!,this whole scenario is just deepening the divide and I fear it is going to result in violence the next time the biggest most successful club in Scotland plays against the dark side!

Comments like what's being said at that agm is just stirring up hatred in Scotland, it's criminal to say such things and get away with it in this small divided upstanding country. But I'm up for it. WATP!
