Levein to learn fate next week

Recommended Posts

Scotland coach Craig Levein expects to learn his fate early next week.

Levein's future is being discussed after a run of poor results left the national side bottom of their World Cup qualifying group.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, Levein said: "The squad for the Luxembourg game will be named on Tuesday and there will be an announcement before then.

"I'm hugely proud to be Scotland manager and want to continue doing the job."

The Scottish Football Association is due to meet on Thursday to discuss Levein's future.

After defeat by Belgium in October, Scotland are bottom of World Cup qualifying Group A with two points from four matches.

Levein says that, despite those results, he wants to continue in the role and has already spoken this week to the SFA's chief executive and president.

"I had a chat with Stewart Regan and Campbell Ogilvie and I'll find out one way or the other early next week," the coach told BBC Scotland's Sportscene programme.

Levein was speaking while acting as a pundit during live coverage of the Scottish Communities League Cup quarter-final between two of his former clubs, Dundee United and Hearts.

Absolute nonsense. What exactly do we need to learn other than he is rank and out of his depth. Its classic SFA biding their time, letting dust settle then saying he remains on for 2 reasons, a) they cant see how bad he is and b) they cant afford to sack him.

Its obvious he is staying on for time being if he is getting to name a squad.

In the past a Luxembourg game would be a 5-0 win, I expect a 0-0 draw this time.

SFA blazers still undecided over future of Scotland boss Craig Levein as meeting ends in farce

THE board met to discuss the future of the Scotland manager after hopes of reaching the 2014 World Cup were killed off but no decision was made.

CRAIG LEVEIN’S future was still hanging in the balance last night as a meeting called to back or sack him descended into farce.

The SFA’s all powerful seven man board met at Hampden to sit in judgment of the Scotland boss on the back of beatings in Cardiff and Brussels that shattered hopes of qualifying for the World Cup.

But, even though they have had a full 10 days to decide whether to stick or twist, it’s understood that they failed to reach an agreement despite being locked in crisis talks for most of yesterday.

And now, with Levein still sweating over his job, they will be asked to reconvene at the National Stadium this morning and urged to finally deliver their verdict on the boss who is scheduled to name a squad on Tuesday of next week for a friendly in Luxembourg on November 14.

It’s unclear the extent of the split but SFA top brass, including chief executive Stewart Regan, are hoping an agreement can be thrashed out today to either relieve Levein of his duties, with immediate effect, or allow him to carry on.

Scotland left Belgium with only two points banked from a possible 12 and Levein’s team anchored to the bottom of Group A, beneath minnows Macedonia.

So, with sections of the Tartan Army now threatening a full-scale revolt, it seems extraordinary that the men in charge of hiring and firing the national manager have so far failed to reach consensus.

The board is headed up by four office bearers – Regan, president Campbell Ogilvie, vice president Alan McCrae, Hibs chairman Rod Petrie – and includes SPL boss Ralph Topping, Scottish Junior FA secretary Tom Johnston and independent non-executive director Barrie Jackson.

It is inconceivable that, with Levein set to name his next squad on Tuesday, they will delay making a final decision on his future any later than this morning.

The manager hopes to be given a chance to turn Scotland’s form slump around but, at the very least, Levein deserves to know his fate as soon as possible as dismay grows around the dithering of the man in charge.
