Steven Conboy jailed for singing pro-IRA songs because of 'drunken love of Celtic'

An Angus man who sang pro-IRA songs has been jailed for four months and 100 days.

Steven James Conboy (26), of North Grimsby, Arbroath, is currently serving a jail sentence and appeared from custody.

He previously admitted that on November 14 at North Grimsby he resisted police, on December 11 and 12 he uttered sectarian slogans and songs and kicked down a door and on December 14 he threatened violence.

Conboy further admitted on February 21 in High Street, shouting and swearing and make derogatory remarks about football clubs, removing his top, making a praying motion and uttering sectarian remarks, all while on bail.

He also admitted that while in a police vehicle and at Arbroath Police Office, he shouted and swore and made sectarian remarks.

Depute fiscal Arlene Shaw said yesterday the incidents on December 11 and 12 happened after complaints were made by a neighbour about noise from his flat.

Ms Shaw said police arrived and Conboy continued shouting and swearing.

Solicitor Billy Rennie said Conboy was well-known to the court and has been an alcoholic since his teenage years.

Mr Rennie blamed Conboy's ''drunken love of Celtic FC,'' but described the utterances as ''football idiocy'' rather than any religious hatred.

He sounds a delight :D

Although why does he have to admit to 'making a praying motion'? Is that illegal?

Think you can get done for crossing yourself in an aggressive manner, load of bollocks but that's the law.

The guy sounds like he needs help, more than locked up.

An aggressive manner? That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard!

Can you? Never heard that one before.

Once again, people can't behave themselves when drunk. One of the reasons why this country is fucked up.
