A Fantastic Memento

A UNIQUE memento presented to the club recently has taken pride of place in the Trophy Room.

Rangers were given a specially-commissioned plate by Forres Mechanics to mark the Scottish Cup tie between the sides at Mosset Park last month.

The game was the first competitive meeting between the sides, although they had played once before in a friendly back in 1908.

Gers, of course, won the tie 1-0 on September 29 thanks to Kal Naismithâ??s first senior goal before half-time.

Before kick-off, the two sides exchanged gifts and the Light Blues received a fantastic plate from their opponents.

It depicts 22 sheep in Forres and Rangers strips playing each other at football with the Moray townâ??s backdrop, including the iconic Nelson Tower, in the background.

The rectangular item is now on show within the stadium and you can see it if you book a place on an Ibrox tour by calling 0871 702 1972.

Prices are £8 for adults, £5.50 and just £24.50 for a family of four. Tours run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday subject to matchdays and other bookings.

Club legend Sandy Jardine is responsible for placing the commemorative plate in the Trophy Room.

He said: â??Itâ??s the very first time weâ??ve ever played Forres competitively and as a club, we like to give any new opponents we face a gift.

â??We have done that with a couple of teams this season but I have to say the gift we got from Forres was one of the most unusual ones we have received.

â??In football terms, it is a really tasteful piece of memorabilia and weâ??ve put it into the Trophy Room for people to see.

â??We have received so many great gifts over the years and we have some wonderful ones from some of the best teams in the world such as Manchester United and Barcelona.

â??Valencia, for instance, have given us beautiful porcelain figures as well and we have been very fortunate.

â??The piece from Forres was very special too and I think itâ??s one of the best gifts we have even had.

â??Iâ??ve no doubt when people come along to Ibrox to do a stadium tour, it will be a talking point and something theyâ??ll look at with a smile.â?

Thats a nice well-thought out gift from Forres there and it is great to see our journey is creating so many positive feel good stories that will last long after we are gone.

I love going through the trophy room looking at all the different bits of memorabilia we have been given by teams we meet, but the restricted space there means you dont get all the story. Imagine a full-size museum that could give the space to these items to tell the stories about them to all who visit.

It really would be a full day out to go through everything we have in our possession through our history.

As Mr Jardine once said "why do the fans need a museum? They've got everything they want or need in the trophy room. I know the feelings of the fans........."

P.S. Not taking away from the fact that it was a nice gesture from Forres!
