The football song “Championi” has become the song of choice for many fans when their team win a league, but the origins of the song are less known. Read on though to find out who wrote the football song “Championi”. Comments (5)|4 Liked It When a football team wins a league the fans have much to cheer about and in recent years many fans of the league winners have taken to singing a song called ‘Championi’ - Championi, championi, oweh, oweh, oweh! All over the world fans have taken to singing this chant when their team win the league. Chelsea fans used it in 2005, Manchester United fans have often adopted it. The original version of the song has a very interesting history and here it is! As you can hear from the song and see from the lyrics, the song Championi was first written about Glasgow Rangers. The song first came out in the mid 1980’s and was performed by a group called ‘The Premier League’ – it was a song written at the onset of the Graeme Souness era and was a song that the Rangers fans have had much reason to sing ever since! The story gets slightly more interesting though as the song Championi features, and was written by, none other than ex-Nazareth member Billy Rankin. Scottish guitarist Billy Rankin joined Nazareth in 1980 before leaving to launch a solo career in 1984 that peaked with the US hit Baby Come Back, but his solo work dried up and he rejoined Nazareth. In between those times Billy Rankin found time to write two songs for the football club Glasgow Rangers (both performed by The Premier League featuring Billy Rankin). One of them was a song called Come Out On Top and the other was the more famous Championi. So famous has the song Championi become that it is often heard around the world when a team win their league. From humble beginnings 25 years ago the song Championi has risen to become a well known football chant, but not a lot of people know it originated as a Glasgow Rangers song and even less know that it was written by ex-Nazareth member Billy Rankin.
