Saints chief says club will need to tighten its belt and slash wages

ST JOHNSTONE bagged a top-six spot last term and earned a Europa League place but the cost of their squad has come back to bite them.

ST JOHNSTONE chairman Steve Brown admits the club are looking to slash their wage bill after posting annual losses of £233,000.

The Perth side bagged a top-six spot last term and earned a Europa League place but the cost of their squad has come back to bite them.

Brown has revealed the clubâ??s wage bill makes up for much of their outgoings and has warned that Saints now have to tighten their belts.

He said: â??We have reported six-figure losses in three of the past four years and this is not a trend which can be allowed to continue.

â??Inevitably, the wage bill for the football operation is the key cost to us and itâ??s at a level which cannot be sustained in the long term.

â??We are therefore in the early stages of a process which will reduce costs in this area.

â??In doing so we must strive to achieve a balance between affordability for the club and performances on the pitch.

â??The income generated from the continued use of McDiarmid Park facilities is critical to the financial

wellbeing of the club.

â??We now must continue to work hard to increase such

business to the stadium.
