A quick question for any of the more knowledgeable members- how frequently in the past have Rangers named a player to be captain in their first year with the club?

Official Gers FB page has confirmed that big Jig is the new captain of the club.

Amokachi wont be happy

ALLY McCOIST says handing the skipper's armband to Lee McCulloch was a natural move following Carlos Bocanegra's departure.

McCulloch will lead Rangers out against Elgin City this afternoon after accepting the captain's armband from McCoist.

And McCoist says the simplicity of the decision and McCulloch's reaction indicate just why he was the obvious choice.

The manager said: "I think the biggest compliment I can pay him is that it's just a natural, no brainer.

"He showed his loyalty to the club and his team mates by staying and putting in some very good performances this year in numerous positions.

"He leads by example and at this moment we see him as a perfect replacement skipper for Carlos.

"We know Carlos's strengths as a leader and a skipper and we see Lee in the same mould.

"The fact that it wasn't a decision we were pondering over for a long time would indicate just exactly what we think of Lee.

"He obviously accepted the role and he's as proud as punch."

i really hope it doesnt turn him into his wee pal barry.

You never know but I dont see Jig being the same. He was castigating last week when he wasnt captain and he will continue that I would think - but he also knows when he himself hasnt done as well as needed.

I just don't think it's right to base our attack around an ancient player who has never been a prolific scorer.

We need to be looking long term and I would like to see us looking at a modern type approach like a 4-2-3-1 with Little on his own in attack and the likes of Templeton, Shiels and McKay behind him.

We should be using these seasons in low leagues to build a team and philosophy.

Football, Rangers and Philosophy. Now, there's a thought!

I thought big Jig was excellent today and in fact nearly every week, he is a natural captain for me. I really can't see why people think he is so bad and I don't think the problem is with Jig but some supporters vision of Scottish football. We cannot pay for the Ronaldo's and Messi's of this world. Every team needs some seasoned journeymen and big Jig is certainly a good example of that.
