Ironic that he finally wins this in what was his worst season with Barca by a mile. I watched nearly all their games last season on Sky and he was a bit part player largely wide left who often just didn't contribute much in games and had an injury plagued season. He only played 27 matches in La Liga in total, not sure how many starts.

 

Fair enough he had a decent Euro tournament, but Messi scored 73 goals for Barca and got 29 assists. Iniesta wasn't in the top 20 players at club level in the season that just past. Any other season I wouldn't have argued against him winning this.

 

Mind you, apart from Messi a lot of the Barca team looked out of sorts. Personally I blame their experimentation with 3-4-3 which just disrupted their flow
