Ladies Record Cup Win

Monday, 23 June 2014 09:30

RANGERS kick started their Scottish Cup campaign with a comprehensive 12-0 win over Hearts Ladies FC.

A hat trick for Cuthbert, braces for Traynor and Mulvey and individual goals from Barr, Swanson, Hill, Cunningham and Ross ensured the Gers safe passage into the 3rd round of the competition.

After another free week, due to national team fixtures, it was a slow start for the home side with their rustiness showing. In the opening half hour it was the visitors who came closest to breaking the deadlock, a sizzling strike dipping at the last second but came crashing back off the crossbar. One minute later Rangers opened their account. Swanson rolled in Cuthbert who calmly chipped the keeper to take the lead.

Captain Michelle Barr scored her first of the season, making an excellent front post run to tap in a Cuthbert cross from close range.

A fantastic slide rule pass from Hill set up Cunningham for an equally fantastic finish to make it three nil in the dying moments of the half. Deep into injury time of the opening period, however, Rangers managed to net a fourth. Amanda Traynor scoring at the back post after latching onto a Mulvey cross.

Two minutes into the second period Rangers scored their fifth. Mulvey’s initial strike rattling off the crossbar, Swanson got a head to the ball but was knocked off her feet by the out rushing keeper before Traynor stepped in and finished the loose ball.

Only a minute later Swanson piled more misery on the young Edinburgh side hitting the back of the net with number six. Cunningham’s impressive run and cross from the left channel was finished well by the Ayrshire striker.

The light blues top scorer for the season got in on the action next, Mulvey scoring from a 1v1 situation after a well weighted defence splitting pass from Cuthbert. The 15 year old midfield maestro Cuthbert scored again herself soon after; a touch and finish from Hill’s run and cross into the box.

Natalie Ross who had dominated the midfield, as she so often does, managed to add her name to the ever growing list of scorers with 15 minutes remaining. A ball in from Hill on the right resulted in a goal mouth stramash which Ross ended by firing a right foot shot into the back of the net.

Hill who had several assists in the second half scored herself to make it double figures for the home side, Steph Knox rolling her in with a well timed pass and she finished low into the corner.

Goal eleven of the afternoon was a fantastic solo run and finish by Mulvey and the twelfth and final goal completed Cuthbert’s hat trick in the closing minute of the game. Cunningham cut back a pass which Cuthbert hot first time, her shot blocked by the keeper but the sharp footed, young Ger followed in and finished her own rebound.

Head Coach Michelle Barr speaking at full time;

“We are delighted to progress to the next round of the Scottish Cup. It was a fantastic team performance with goals coming from all areas of the pitch. Credit to a young Hearts side who kept going right till the end but our creativity and high tempo passing proved to be too much for them.

"Special mention must go to Erin Cuthbert who scored her first senior hat trick today- hopefully it will be the first of many for her in top flight football.”
