I am referring, of course, to Sellout Saturday. This was to be the day that Scottish football fans backed up the Daily Record headline that screamed â??We donâ??t need Rangersâ? and showed a watching world that attendances in the SPL would not be adversely affected by the loss of Rangersâ?? fan base. Sellout Saturday was, instead, one epic fail. The dream of an Aberdeen supporter (one of the dwindling few), Sellout Saturday was the SPL teamsâ?? chance to slap Rangers in the kisser and start a whole new era in the countryâ??s top football league. This bold new era would see fans swarm back to support their local team and deliver a message that Scottish Football doesnâ??t need Rangers. But there was no sellout. Sellout Saturday didnâ??t remotely live up to expectations. More people attended Rangers midweek cup tie last week than collectively showed up in the SPL games on Saturday and the Edinburgh derby on Sunday. The SPL is floundering and, by the time Rangers are ready to re-enter it, it may not even be there anymore. More and more people are coming round to the distinct possibility that by the time Rangers get back to the top flight of the game, it wonâ??t be the top flight anymore. The SFL may swallow up whatâ??s left of the Scottish â??Premierâ? League. By that time, of course, Celtic will be playing in the EPL or will have conquered Europe and wonâ??t want to be playing in Scotland anymore. I am, of course, joking. There is more chance of there being a real Sellout Saturday in the SPL than Celtic playing in England or being anything other than an easy skelp in Europe. Meanwhile, history books will record that the 11th of August was not a sellout for the failing SPL. It was, instead, a real washout.
