David Longmuir - Gers Will Bring Vitality

Recommended Posts

DAVID LONGMUIR believes Rangers will bring more vitality to the Irn Bru Third Division as they prepare to make their league debut this weekend at Peterhead.

The match at tiny Balmoor Stadium is a complete sell-out with almost 4,500 fans set to take in the game.

Itâ??s a scene which is set to be replicated at lower league grounds across the country as fans clamour to get into small stadia to see the Light Blues setting out on their new adventure.

SFL president Longmuir doesnâ??t believe Gers should have been moved into the bottom tier of senior Scottish football but accepts thatâ??s where they now are.

And he feels the decision to put the Ibrox team there is one which can still have a positive impact on the game as a whole.

Speaking exclusively on RangersTV tonight, Longmuir said: â??I think having Rangers in the league now will create awareness and will bring a new vitality to the Third Division.

â??I know itâ??s probably not the place that Rangers want to be and probably shouldnâ??t be but nevertheless, thatâ??s the way Scottish football has handled this situation.

â??Having been at Glebe Park last Sunday to see the Ramsdens Cup tie, I thought Brechin put up a great show and Rangers were a wee bit rusty.

â??But it was more to do with the buzz and excitement that having Rangers in town brought and I hope Rangers fans will be welcomed like that wherever they go in the SFL.

â??All 10 clubs in the Third Division will benefit from having Rangers there. Attendances will be terrific, albeit only on a couple of occasions each season at each ground.

â??The talent youâ??ve got in the Rangers squad will surely motivate some of the other young stars elsewhere.

â??Theyâ??ll say: â??Thatâ??s the level I need to be playing at to get to one of the biggest clubs in Europe and the worldâ?? and thatâ??s great.

â??Young Rangers players will also benefit from playing against seasoned pros and there are lots of plusses for the club and others over the next season or two.

â??The Rangers squad will improve but they wonâ??t have it all their own way. There will be tough challenges on the field of play but theyâ??ll be warmly welcomed wherever they go.

â??Scottish football is a community-based sport and we forget that sometimes. The pursuit of finances has maybe clouded our judgement a bit there.

â??There will be a bit of finding their feet to be done at Rangers and theyâ??ll have to get back to basics for a while but weâ??ll all benefit in the long run.â?

The SFL and Longmuir is the way forward now, Rangers must work tirelessly to make sure both the SFL and Longmuir become the dominant forces in Scottish football. The corruption in the SFA and SPL must be swept away by the honesty and true integrity of Longmuir and the SFL.

I don't have any serious gripes against Longmuir and the SFL for the part they played in events this summer, but they did have the option to place us in whatever division they chose and they decided it was only right to put us in division three.

If the SPL wasn't an independant body and instead still the top tier of the SFL, do you all think things would have worked out differently for us?

Do you think we would all be talking about the honesty and integrity shown by the SFL or would we just despise the whole lot of them?

Don't get me wrong, life's too short to hold grudges and worry about what if's. We don't have much option but to accept the cards we've been dealt and get on with it. I'm just not really sure where those in our support who choose to champion Longmuir and the SFL clubs as the benchmark for fairness, honesty and integrity are drawing this conclusion from.

I agree with your sentiments. I think we were the victims of the SFL getting their revenge on the SPL but that is water under the bridge now. I suppose they had the choice not to admit us at all given all the rhetoric that was being spouted at that time. To be fair most of them did not get involved in all of that. I just wish now they would really do the honourable thing and get rid of Regan.

I think the window of opportunity for us to make as many friends as possible within the SFL will be relatively small because time passes extremely quickly and Regan, Doncaster and Co are definitely going to ramp up their push for league reconstruction after the disastrous way they've handled our administration situation.

What Scottish football really needs to see is Regan, Doncaster and certain others being sacked or forced to resign before the actual process of league reconstruction even starts because if Scottish football allows these people to oversee the redesigning of our game it's almost certain to be a shambles of a process and a shambles of a result. There's absolutely no way on this earth that these people should be given the opportunity to reconstruct Scottish football in order to save their jobs and eventually walk away from it with their heads held high saying "look what we've done! It's fantastic!" because they simply don't deserve it. Regan in particular has done more damage during his relatively short tenure so far than I can remember for a long, long time. The man simply has to go and not be allowed to play any further part in our game, especially reconstructing it FFS!!

I don't think it was as much about revenge against the SPL for the SFL. I do think it was quite an easy decision to make though. The only difficulty and indeed only excuse for following suit on the SPL's insane decision of puting it to a vote was the league reconstruction carrot being dangled by the SPL. Other than that it was pretty straightforward for them. A team applying to join the SFL has to start at the bottom tier.

In the end the carrot wasn't big enough to disuade them from doing the 'right thing' and seizing the opportunity to steal the cash cow with both hands. There was never any question of our acceptance into the SFL. That said it would have been interesting (for lack of a better word) to see how the SPL would have responded to that scenario.

The man is a coward as is Campbell Ogilvie. Both should resign imo

Good and honest statement.

Unfortunately, Longmuir had better be careful.

With sentiments like that, he'll be shot down in flames by the media before too long.

In this present climate it's just not au fait to say anything positive about Rangers.

Just wait until Joe, Phil and the gang get him in their sights.
