Could Rangers introduce safe standing?

Recommended Posts

Just thinking - as Rangers are out of the top league in Scotland, we are no longer bound by the Taylor report or the Scottish equivalent, could we experimentally introduce safe standing to Ibrox to see if there is a real demand?

I realise there isn't much money kicking around but maybe it could be done in a cost effective way by replacing areas where the seats are near the end of their lifetime.

Perhaps, in these days of low prices, fans could pay for the standing areas by paradoxically paying a premium for it.

Another problem would be that we may have to put back seats when we return to the SPL but if we could show for three years that the system works without incident, we could campaign for it to be allowed back into the top tier of Scottish football in its modern form - at least in limited numbers.

The German system where the seats convert into a standing are and vice versa would be ideal but the cost would be prohibitive I'd imagine.

It's the German system I was think of but as the cost is prohibitive, I was suggesting that we start with a small experimental area. The point is that there is no rule to stop us.

We could even save money by doing without the seat, all it needs is a barrier on every row which although not insignificant, can't be that expensive in comparison with replacing seats ripped up by Celtic fans.

I think it would be a good idea to return both the enclosures to standing areas. Obviously it would mean moving season ticket holders that still want to sit but I'm sure this could work without a mega expensive re-vamp to the stadium. The enclosures were traditionally noisey and made a massive contribution to the atmosphere in the olden days (about 20 years ago!!). The Blue Order has shown that there are plenty people who want to stand and sing?

It would be good to see it eventually, but not now. There's no need to spend money on unnecessary projects right now, which I'm sure CG would agree with.

The point is that the opportunity is there, as there is no rule to stop us outside the top division. There is a consensus that demand for this is there, so the debate is whether it's worth taking the plunge.

There is a difference between ripping out seats and dismantling them. Seats are damaged and replaced all the time and so it could be argued that this could pay for itself if the old seats are used for repairs.

And like I said, you could charge a premium to those who really, really want this. An extra £3 a ticket over 22 or more games a season would be about £200 for each spectator in just one year. That sounds like it would be way more than enough to pay for it to me - £4000 for a row of 20, £80k for 20x20. I think it would a lot cheaper than that.

If people aren't prepared to pay a bit for it for it then they can't want it enough.
