St Johnstone - Europa League exit

Recommended Posts

Manager Steve Lomas was proud of St Johnstone's performance in the draw with Eskisehirspor, despite the result meaning the Perth side's European exit.

The 1-1 stalemate at McDiarmid Park completed a 3-1 aggregate win for the Turkish side in the Europa League second qualifying round.

"I thought they were magnificent," Lomas told BBC Scotland.

"It was always going to be key if they got the away goal, the tie was effectively over."

â??We've got nothing to be ashamed ofâ?

Gregory Tade St Johnstone

Gregory Tade headed St Johnstone ahead 10 minutes before half-time and Nigel Hasselbaink had an effort saved by Eskisehirspor goalkeeper Ruud Boffin before Veysel Sari levelled in the second half.

Boffin also denied Liam Craig as the Scottish Premier League side were denied a home leg victory.

"When you get your chances, you've got to take them," said Lomas. "Nigel Hasselbaink's [chance] to make it 2-0 is the key moment. They were looking edgy.

"I'm very disappointed at the manner of their goal from our set piece but that's football. Liam's corner lofted into the goalkeeper's arms and they break from our set piece. We've got to learn from that.

"They kept going, they had a couple more chances when we could've won the game.

"I thought they showed against a very good Turkish team that we're an honest, hard-working and good set of footballers."

Tade was also buoyed by the performance and expects his partnership with Hasselbaink to "dazzle people this year".

"We'll do what people don't expect of us and we've got goals in us," said the Frenchman.

"It's going to be a great season, I can feel it. I'm excited for this season.

"We said before the game [against Eskisehirspor] if we managed to score first we were still in the tie and would have a great chance but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

"They were skaky, they were there for the taking. We had two great chances.

"We were unlucky, at least we created good chances against a big club with a bigger budget than us so we've got nothing to be ashamed of."

All Scottish teams out by the end of August?? Here's hoping!!

That is an extremely short-sighted view IMHO.

St Johnstone have earned us exactly half a point in the coefficients for this draw and we are currently 50th out of 53 this season, with only San Marino, Andorra, and Liechtenstein below us. If other Scottish teams are no more successful, then by the time we get back into Europe in 2016 we will be in severe danger of having to start in the 1st Qualifying Round of the CL or EL.

The only advantage I can see to that, is that it might encourage summer football by default.

The SPL only have themselves to blame if that happens. Rangers carried Scotlands position for years until Celtic finally did assist for a couple of seasons. Then all these clubs shoot themselves in the foot.

This is the first summer Im not dissapointed with another Scottish club going out.

The game has to hit rock bottom before massive changes are forced and we arent far away from that....San Marino, Andorra and Liechtenstein says it all.

Why should we give a fuck what happens to the SPL teams in Europe when they have tried to KILL us ? It may be short-sighted but I petulantly couldn't give two shits if they amass ZERO co-efficient points. They made the bed for us ALL, now let them reap what they have sown.

In other words, just in case it wasn't clear, I fully believe..... FUCK EM.

Agreed, i've considered the co-efficient idea in the past but the treatment of us has just been too much.

Because at some point in the future we, too, are going to have to lie in that same bed...it would be better if it wasn't all pishy and blood stained, like that morning I woke up in Possil all those years ago. And while I won't care if the SPL teams that booted us die, while they represent Scotland I can't hope they fail.

Anyway, who's left? Can't see Motherwell getting much from their draw, a hard one, dunno who the Tayside pricks have, celtc have a chance I suppose but I've thought that about us often enough only to be disappointed.

The survival and rebuilding of my club the Rangers is more important to me than the co-efficient points gained by other clubs, while I don't celebrate other teams getting beat I don't cheer them when they win. For far too long it is all left to Rangers to keep Scottish football as high as possible, and while doing that the fans of other teams who do cheer when Rangers lose in Europe don't care about co-efficient points, including the SFA themselves when getting to the final in Manchester proved.

Andy, we are already lying in that bed as it is. The SPL and SFA have crippled us. Being in Europe will be short term affairs going forward. Other than 2008 it was already and that was without the handcuffs and feet ball and chains tied to us.

Do we really want Celtic to be making the group stages of the CL in our SPL absence ? Allowing them to pull even further away financially? Maybe, for all our sakes, I should be hoping Cetic win the CL as it MIGHT help us in 5 yrs time IF we are in Europe. Nah, not for me. If CFC make the CL group stages in each of the next 5 yrs they, if financially prudent, should be at least 40 million ahead of us..... Do we honestly want that ?

I would honestly rather the country coefficient was in the shitter. Because if it is then we are ALL in the same boat, same starting point but we will have already cut our cloth accordingly.
