Brechin fear financial chaos if Rangers don't get licence in time for Ramsdens Cup tie

Jul 25 2012 By Greig Thomas

Brechin have warned their financial plans for the new season could be wrecked if this weekendâ??s Ramsdens Cup tie against Rangers is called off.

Charles Greenâ??s newco are still awaiting the licence to allow the Ibrox side to compete in SFA tournaments, with the new season just days away.

Brechin are due to host Rangers in front of the TV cameras in the first-round tie on Sunday â?? but uncertainty surrounds the 4000 sell-out fixture due to the licence hold-up.

And Glebe Park vice- chairman Martin Smith said: â??Iâ??ve been having sleepless nights.

â??Every day I wake up expecting a phone call or text saying they have the licence and we can play.

â??Weâ??re going on the assumption the game will go ahead.â?

Smith also believes the financial implications of Rangers not being in the top flight, coupled with the possible cancellation of their cup-tie, would mean Brechinâ??s budget taking a hit.

He said: â??We got the Armageddon scenario from Neil Doncaster not so long ago where Sky pull the plug completely and put SPL and SFL clubs in danger.

â??And that would mean a big change in our circumstances.

â??On that basis, we thought the Rangers game coming up would help to fill the gap.

â??Weâ??ve not done the budget yet for this year but obviously with the Rangers game in mind we could have a great start to the season.

â??Weâ??ve sold more season tickets and that â?? allied with the money coming from the cup game and from the TV coverage â?? would make a huge difference.â?

Brechin go into the new campaign a league above Rangers but Smith reckons the cup fixture could still be their biggest game on and off the pitch this season.

He added: â??We sold our tickets out in 45 minutes. Rangers did the same thing at Ibrox.

â??We have also sold all of our sponsorship packages and everything is in place.

â??It is all set up for a wonderful day here in Brechin â?? as long as Rangers get a licence.â?

RANGERS’ opponents in their first outing as a newco have made commemorative mugs to mark the occasion.

Brechin City will welcome the Gers to Glebe Park for Sunday’s Ramsdens Cup first-round match, providing their Ibrox opponents are granted the SFA licence.

And the Second Division club, from Angus, are keen to cash in on the historic clash, which is being shown on BBC Alba, with merchandise.

Around 1500 tickets were put up for sale to their own supporters on Monday after granting Rangers an allocation of 2500.

Brechin secretary Gus Fairlie said: “Our tickets went on sale on Monday evening and sold out on Monday evening.

“Rangers sold theirs as quickly as us. I’m delighted to say it’s a sell-out.”

It's a real shame that Brechin have to put up with all this rubbish from the SFA/SPL. In fact, it's a disgrace what these organizations are doing to everyone associated with playing Rangers.

On another note, does anyone know how to get BBC Alba. I thought it was on Freeview, but I can't find it on my mam's TV. Is it provided via sky and would most pubs have access to it?

Who should Brechin sue ?

SFA ?

SPL ?

Lawell ?

Harper McLeod ?

Those are the erseholes holding things up!

They will still blame us. Steve Lomas tonight complaining about not being able to sign anyone and is blaming Sky but says he understands about "sporting integrity".

No-one takes anything SPL chairmen, owners, players or managers say anymore seriously, though. It's quite unbelievable how, after all the hatred and insanity, the SPL are equally if not more disliked than us.

I don't take any great pleasure form their misery (well, a bit) but I am baffled on a daily basis.
