ian1964 10,847
SKY and ESPN are set to negotiate a CHEAPER TV deal with the SPL after Rangers were plunged into the Third Division. The main sponsors will NOT pull out but will not be paying top dollar. A source said: â??They are not walking away but will not be paying massive sums without Old Firm matches. â??They want to work with Scottish football and make it work but it will be for much less.â? A ESPN spokesman said: â??We have held consistently that the SPL, SFA, SFL and their collective clubs make the decisions about Scottish football and we have looked to be supportive throughout the current difficult circumstances. â??We want to have a continued relationship with Scottish football and, naturally, that would need to make sense for Scottish football, for fans and for our business. â??We look forward to having fruitful discussions on that basis.â? SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster warned that sponsors had clauses in their contract which said they must have Rangers and Celtic in the league. Sky did not want to comment. pete 2,511
How many 25.000+ players do Celtic have to pay. First round CL knock-out is a disaster for them.

foggy dewhurst 0
as half of the cash cow is now gone it should be reduced by half simples .
BrahimHemdani 1
as half of the cash cow is now gone it should be reduced by half simples . Only a proportion of the £2.7M that Celtic got for winning the SPL last season relates to the TV money and that £2.7M is only say 10% of their playing budget and possibly 5% of their overall budget (sorry don't have exact figures but it will be that kind of proportion) so it is not that simple. It WILL have an impact on them but not nearly as much as it has on other clubs.

I disagree I think they will lose many more millions out of this than anyone. celtc fans are driven be a hatred if us not a love of celtc. split us up and we remain unchanged but the suffer huge falls in ticket sales. my guess is their ticket sales will drop by 8 figures. they will keep the team together for cl qualifiers but if they fail to qualify watch the fire sale.

GS, please do me the courtesy of re-reading the OP and my comments which relate solely to the TV money. Celtic have lost more fans in real numbers and percentage terms that any other club in the SPL in recent seasons from the peak average of 57671 in 2008/09 to 45582 the following season (although they rose again modestly the last two years to 48968 & 50904). [Rangers BTW have been remarkably consistent 45305 - 48091]. I agree with you that their numbers will fall sharply after the novelty of winning a one horse race wears off and they tumble out of the CL again. AND I think this effect will multiply in Y2 and Y3; when I can't see them getting much more than 30,000. BUT my guess is their ticket sales will drop by 8 figures. I can't see where you get that. Let's say they lose 10,000 per game (which won't happen initially) x 19 games x say £25 a pop; that's less than £5M and includes VAT. So my best guess would be about £2M - £3M in the first season and rising. Again a not inconsiderable sum and taken with the loss of SPL money (inc spnsorship and TV) might come up to about £5M next season and rising. So YES, they will have to do some pruning but they have more than ample scope for that, don't they?

I am told season book sales are way down and that has a cumulative effect. the advantage to season books is of course getting a ticket no problem in times of high demand and convince of course. if you can trot up and get tickets for any game ad hock then many will take that option. your very much correct about how much fat they can afford to trim. if they have any sense they will bunker up and clear all debt over the next 3 years and build a cash reserve.
