Then I'm sorry but this country is more f#*ked than I thought and it's time pack the bags because the bigots have won. pete 2,499 Posted July 10, 2012 Share Posted July 10, 2012 I think it is hard to separate religion, history and politics and I wouldn't begin to try to explain this in the context of 20th century Scotland. However from my own experience as a child brought up in a very religious household, we learned tolerance and respect. I can remember watching football with my dad and supporting Celtic when they won the European cup and England when they won the world cup. Somewhere between then and now we have lost the plot and our society is much the worse for that. It would take more than a discussion on here to understand the present (interesting discussion though it is). One thing I am sure of is we need to return to supporting our team and that has nothing to do with religion. This is not to ignore our heritage but if you delve into the past you will see that the present bears no comparison to our heritage. While my family may have supported England (I do have my doubts) there is absolutely no chance of them ever having supported Celtic. I remember as a kid walking into the house wearing a Celtic scarf round my neck as a joke. I found myself against the door with my feet dangling a yard off the ground. The problem is that some of us think we are hated because we're protestant. Some of us think that it's relevant to football that we're pro-union. Some of us, for some reason, imagine that our opinions on the monarchy are connected to sport. These problems are what our FOOTBALL club really need to leave behind. It's not a matter of leaving your culture behind when you go through the turnstile - it's a matter of knowing when it's relevant. If we don't, then some of us will still be quite fairly accused of prejudice, bigotry and arrogance. Remember - we are the people, but they are people too! I did read the thread , i'm asking you what I should change when I turn up to support my team, what is it that i'm doing that makes people hate our club ?
