Nobody likes us! We should care!

Recommended Posts

And with arrogance comes dislike.

I don't know about anyone else though, but throughout my life, most neutrals I've encountered disliked Celtc more than us. Even the sheepies.

But the 'Loyal' aspect of being a Rangers fan doesn't fit in well with the modern offended Scotland.

Not me TBH.

I was only two at the time, so can anyone say if there was as much glee in 1994 at Celtic's problems as there has been for ours?

I think if it had been them, then the SPL / SFA would have been a lot more sympathetic. I also believe the SPL would have dealt with the situation in house and not passed the decision on to fans of rival clubs to decide their fate .

No chance would they have allowed Rangers fans to decide the fate of Pacific shelf, and if they did and we had tried the same bully bhoy tactics that lot have indulged in then we would have been hung out to dry by the media and powers that be .

Just my opinion .

There was definitely glee, we enjoyed it and mocked them but I don't recall anything more than that. Certainly I don't remember anyone suggesting they should be kicked out the league or investigated despite there clearly being serious mismanagement at Celtic. It was a different time of course, there wasn't the internet for one which has fuelled a lot of what's gone on. But in truth I think most other supporters, ours included, simply shrugged their shoulders and got on with supporting their own teams. No one suggested boycotts or stripping of trophies.

I agree that a lot of it is down to our success on the pitch and I'd be hoping to continue that for a long time to come. That explains a dislike of the team and a hope that the team will be poorer among other clubs. What has really surprised me has been the lack of empathy for the supporters, from pretty much everyone. Why should Hibs fans not feel empathy for us, they went through similar not that long ago, or indeed Hearts fans who are looking into a similar abyss themselves? Discounting the nutters in their support for a moment, why don't the more rational Hibs/Hearts fans feel a kinship with the more rational Rangers fan?

It can't be just our on field success that's turned us into pariahs, there must be more to it.

One thing we can do to get a better understanding is look more deeply at the possible perceptions of our various affiliations. For example, our Unionist and Royalist affiliations will annoy anyone who dislikes these aspects and it's not only Celtic fans and catholic fans of other clubs who'll be in that demographic. Nationalists and anyone with a dislike of the British monarchy will disagree with a lot of our fans' politics and the display of them at the football. A lot of people simply don't want to see or hear political stuff at football matches where they're going (often with young family) for fun and entertainment of the football variety.

Then we have the old "glory hunter" chestnut where fans of many smaller clubs in Scotland see their neighbours, friends and even family members, completely snub their struggling local team in preference of supporting Rangers or Celtic. A lot of these football fans probably feel quite bitter about the amount of people from their home town who were born there, but choose not to support the local team. I remember this aspect very well from when I was at school and classed as a glory hunter by classmates etc who were Motherwell fans. It's a slightly unusual aspect in this subject, but I do think it's one of the contributing factors to the hatred and bitterness shown towards us.

Just a couple of thoughts...

"Nobody likes us, I still don't care" when did we start to take notice of what the ******** et al, thought of us.

In the last few months, we have proven to be right all along, not paranoia, the blatant truth

We (football) have turned the concept of Rivals into that of Enemies.

It is a sport - a professional sport, passionate fans but while it was always tribal it is now vitrolic.

There was a time when clubs like Dundee and Hearts had a strong 'Unionist/Royalist' element to their support, that's almost died away now. I wonder if eventually that'll happen to us too. I've mixed feelings about it but I agree it annoys some others.

I'm less convinced about supporters not following their local team. That's gone on for a long, long time. If anything it should have the opposite effect, where we're not some remote metropolitan elite, we're the guy next door.

That's a view certainly. Had we more cordially relations things might have turned out differently, but they might not have to be fair. If you never take notice of others it's hard to learn anything about yourself of course.

I don't think it'll fade out of our support in hurry and I'm fine with that. People are entitled to do and say pretty much whatever they like in a free society.... oh wait a minute. Not in New Scotland.

It's because it's gone on for such a long time that I think it might be a relevant factor, even if it's a slightly subliminal one and not one of the biggest issues. I'm going back over 25 years to when I was being called a glory hunter at high school, but surely it stands to reason that in the back of those minds somewhere they probably still regard the guy next door who went to school with them (but didn't support the local team) as a glory hunter. I'm sure that mindset goes back even further, so you're talking about several generations.
