Breaking: SPL Vote NO to Rangers

Recommended Posts

SCOTTISH football was last night facing financial armageddon

RAITH ROVERS chief has insisted the crisis-hit SPL is now a DEAD PARROT

Scottish Sun Says SPL chairmen believe dumping the Light Blues from the top flight into the Third Division could leave a staggering £16MILLION black hole in soccerâ??s finances.

This would leave a string of cash-strapped senior clubs staring into the abyss â?? and worried footie chiefs fighting to stop the total collapse of the sport here.

Last night one SPL chairman â?? who is voting no to a newco in todayâ??s crunch meeting at Hampden â?? said: â??Itâ??s on the brink of Armageddon.

â??The game is heading for a meltdown and Iâ??m not sure some people realise how serious it is.

â??There could be six or seven clubs facing ruin unless the situation is resolved. A solution has to be found.â?

The chairman added: â??If we vote to keep Rangers in the SPL the fans wonâ??t buy season tickets.

â??If Rangers are allowed to sink to the bottom division then a host of clubs will NOT survive.

â??Around eight sides will not be able to deal with the loss of TV money, crowds and sponsorship.â?

Worried Motherwell boss Stuart McCall voiced his fears that at least HALF of our big-name clubs could fold.

McCall said: â??My fears are based on Rangers being in the Third Division.

â??Everyone really has to know the reality of whatâ??s going to happen.

â??You can have all the integrity in the world but the rumour is half the SPL clubs might enter administration if it happens.â?

The doomsday scenario emerged as SPL chairmen look set to refuse newco Rangers entry into the league today â?? despite a grovelling apology yesterday from the new Ibrox regime.

It followed a meeting of lower league clubs at Hampden to discuss plans to let Rangers play in the First Division next season in the hope they return to the SPL within a year â?? protecting teamsâ?? bank balances.

But many furious SFL outfits slammed the move â?? and demanded the fallen footie giants begin life as a newco at the bottom of the pile.

They will vote next week on the fate of the Light Blues â?? and the future of the Scottish game â?? with 16 out of the 30 clubs having to vote in Gersâ?? favour for them to go into the first division.

But SPL sides believe Scottish football will spiral out of control if the fallen Ibrox giants are out of the elite division for three years â?? the least amount of time it would take them to win their way back into the top flight.

Last night Rangers supremo Charles Green was hoping to secure a last-minute plan that could see the club stay in the SPL next season.

His package contained a number of sweeteners â?? including backing SPL voting reform and cutting payments to the Old Firm.

The Yorkshireman also vowed to pay all Gersâ?? football debts at home and abroad, as well as accepting a transfer embargo dished out by the SFA appeals body. And he agreed to take a points deduction and say sorry for the actions of previous owners Sir David Murray and Craig Whyte â?? which was delivered by chairman Malcolm Murray 24 hours before the crunch summit.

Mr Murray said: â??The club needs to make an apology. It is only right that someone expresses our sorrow and regret.â?

But the majority of clubs will not agree to let them in and now fear for their own existence if the SFL clubs shunt them to the lowest competition.

A number of chairman were understood to be thinking of doing a U-turn and accepting Rangers â?? but are terrified to face the wrath of their fans.

Fuming supporters across the country have vowed not to buy season tickets or attend games if Rangers are allowed back into the top division.

An insider said: â??The SPL sides are agreed that Rangers should be punished and do not deserve to be in the SPL.

â??It was expected a plan to put them into the First Division was ample punishment but it looks like the SFL sides are not happy with that.

â??This has left a lot of SPL chairmen really worried about the future of their own clubs. Three years without Rangers could be catastrophic.

â??The whole situation is a sorry mess and the football landscape in Scotland could be changed forever depending on future decisions.â?

Last night Rangers Supporters Association general secretary John MacMillan said: â??I have some sympathy for some of the chairmen as they are in an impossible position.

â??However, at the start of this they said they would listen to their fans and their fans said they wanted to put Rangers into the Third Division.

â??All the SPL clubs said that they wanted to protect â??sporting integrityâ??.â?

Mr MacMillan added: â??Where is their â??sporting integrityâ?? when they are trying to do a deal to put Rangers into the First Division and why are they not listening to their fans?

â??It appears to me that they want to suck the blood out of Rangers while continuing to suck the money out of Rangers.

â??I think that some of the chairmen who have been speaking publicly have been very hypocritical.â?

Is there any well run clubs in Div 1 and 2? If those who enter Admin in the SPL, they should be replaced. What is the saying we always hear....no 1 player is bigger than a club. Well no 1 team is bigger than the league. If Motherwell drop out then they can get replaced by Falkirk.

The game needs to start again from Scratch. 3 division league structure with 2 up 2 down. Summer football. 1 body but it has to be ran by football men who are in it for the good of the game.

well said john McMillan.

time to end this farce. go to the third a.d let the spl lie in the shit stained bed it made for its self.

Why is the third fair on the teams sitting waiting to get into the league don't they have a say.

were creating the vacancy.

indeed there is no vacancy. its the same as happened with Livingston and indeed I think Gretna were sent to the third before being thrown out all together.

Green has agreed to pay all football debts? I would assume he has not, since that could mean that HMRC and Ticketus may want their share too. The only way this could possibly be done is by asking all creditors if they agree to this. (I laughed)

If anything, we can arrange a friendly game or two with each of the teams needing pay and let tham have a neat amount of gate receipts. I for one would not mind playing St. Etienne, Arsenal, Orebrö or Rapid Vienna. Hearts, well. That said, I was under the impression that the SPL retained some of our price money for last season? Might have been a rumour though.

Exactly we are in no league so what gives us the right to get into the Div3 before them.
