Ally staying as boss - On SSN

Recommended Posts

Dont disagree Zappa, all the more reason to at least retain some consistency - although I can also see those who will see this as a chance of a clean break.

But who would we get to replace him in that event ?

I would have thought that we would have a better chance of retaining players i.e. agreement to TUPE with McCoist still at the helm.

Agreed.

I really want Ally to stay, but I think if he does stay on with a crippled squad & points deduction (plus any other sanctions the witch hunt hammer us with) we should be prepared to give him more than just one season. Obviously we don't know yet what the sanctions are going to be or what squad Ally has to work with, but if he's left with a gutted squad and points deduction we're going to be lucky to finish in second place in the SPL, so should adjust our expectations of him accordingly. All we can do for now is wait and see what the sanctions are and what players Ally has to work with next season.

If we stay in the SPL and have a points deduction then I, for one, will be looking at what we do by adding back the points deduction. for me, if we had say a 15 point deduction, it wouldnt be about finishing 2nd or 3rd, it would be "what would our position be if we hadnt had that deduction".

This is only one scenario obviously because we also have the issue of possible transfer embargos (that one is unlikely now), other sanctions imposed upon us, TUPE etc etc.

I guess my point is that I personally would look at ALL the circumstances surrounding where we are as a club and what we can do given resources, sanctions, penalties etc etc - not just a "we finished behind Celtic so McCoist must be shit" mentality that some have.

Absolutely and that's exactly how I see it too. There's going to be a lot of different factors to take into account and one of the biggest is what the squad looks like come the end of the transfer window.

You're spot on with the points deduction, it just has to be added back on in our minds.

One thing that could also be a factor is the mentality within the squad and individual players mind states because with a reduced/poorer squad and points deduction they will have very little chance of winning the league and that could make a big difference to results.

Ally is certainly the best stature of boss we could hope for in the third division.

He's too good for the 3rd division. Billy Kirkwood is probably too good for the 3rd division.

There's better managers out there. I'd rather have a good manager than a Rangers man as manager.

Just like there's better players out there. We can't afford those either.

I'll tell you what though, I'd rather have Ally McCoist at the helm of our Newco than just about any of them.

If we lost him, I can almost guarantee the alternative would be no better AND he'd be starting with a good bit less squad wise.

Picked this up from RM so dont have a link to the original article.

ALLY McCOIST last night admitted he was hours from quitting Rangers but “stepped back from the brink” after crunch talks with Charles Green.

McCoist confirmed the Record Sport story that he was set to leave the club after a row on Wednesday with newco chief executive Green.

The manager believed he’d been put in an impossible position when told by a former director that Green was planning on getting rid of him.

But after an early-morning meeting yesterday the pair agreed to end the feud which led to McCoist deciding he would remain in his post.

And last night McCoist confirmed our story. He said: “It’s fair to say I didn’t deny that line at any time.

“At first, when I was told there might have been a move to get me out my reaction was natural. I was furious.

“I did confront Charles Green about it on Wednesday. I was looking for answers and that meeting didn’t end well.

“I was then left with no other option but to contemplate my future believing that I wasn’t part of the plans.

“It was clear we had to sit down and talk about all of this and we had another meeting yesterday.

“I’ve reassessed my position and taken a step back from the brink.

“As things stand at the moment I am still manager.

“At critical times we all have to consider our futures but having said that the most important thing is not my future or what happens with Charles Green.

“The most important thing is the future of my club.

“Right now that is all that matters. So let’s all just see what happens but it must always be the right thing

for Rangers.”

McCoist’s fury erupted on Wednesday but everything changed a day later when a wealthy and powerful

consortium headed by his mentor Walter Smith broke cover declaring they wanted to buy out Green’s group.

Green paid only £5.5million for the assets of the old club after it was pushed into liquidation by HMRC but suddenly, despite his bluster, he found himself under pressure he didn’t expect.

Rangers fans made it clear they wouldn’t be buying into his scheme, his day of triumph was undermined and he had to deal with the McCoist fall-out.

In an attempt to claw back some credibility with the fans Green tried desperately to rubbish Record Sport’s story – with The Sun only too willing to swallow the line because they’ve been so far off the pace for more than a year – and then pressed for a meeting with McCoist yesterday.

They met at 7.30am at the Glasgow offices of the club’s lawyers and McCoist agreed to stay on.

Smith’s group, which includes bus tycoon Douglas Park and Jim McColl, regarded as one of Scotland’s wealthiest men, have been told they’ll have to come up with £20m to purchase the club, which is in keeping with Green’s outrageous statements.

Even though he is given to hyperbole Green knows he can’t succeed without the fans and they have made it clear they won’t buy season tickets and they want him to deal with Smith’s group.

Last night this consortium were still confident of buying Green’s people out believing the fans will line up behind them in ever greater numbers in the days ahead
