Rangers: SPL set deadline for investigation documents

Recommended Posts

The Scottish Premier League has set a deadline for Rangers to hand over key documents relating to an investigation into possible dual contracts.

A request was made by the SPL in March and BBC Scotland has learned they are still awaiting information from the club's administrator Duff & Phelps.

If the club fail to comply, it is understood the league will look to impose some form of sanction.

The investigation concerns Rangers' use of employee benefits trusts.

The EBTs are the subject of a long-running HM Revenue and Customs tax tribunal, which could result in a £75m bill for Rangers.

A BBC documentary, 'Rangers - Who Sold the Jerseys' - revealed that over 70 players and coaches benefited from the scheme.

Meanwhile, Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan says his organisation has no plans to step in to investigate possible dual contracts at Rangers, insisting he will leave it to the SPL.

The SFA will act as the appeal body should one be needed after the SPL investigation.

"I haven't see the programme but out position hasn't changed," said Regan.

Ahem ... what sort of documents? Why would the admins have, control, and/or not hand over those? It relates to stuff long before their appointments. If anything, these documents are with HMRC, no?

NB: BBC Scotland has learned ... and understoods ...

So, just so I'm clear - Celtic use EBT too, and BBC employees are being investigated for tax evasion.

Yes, Rangers are the only ones with a dubious past and we shouldn't focus on anyone else...

According to Celtic at the time HMRC advised them that the system was not legal and they closed it and settled any money due to HMRC. I remember this and at the time I thought it was a idiotic procedure, not knowing that we were doing it big time. I'm so pissed off.

just answered my own question - according to the HMRC website, employers are required to keep records for the current and the past three years PAYE etc. So it is possible that anything before that may have been shredded.

Seems to me that Celtic DIDN'T use EBTs - they paid a SECOND, unregistered contract which was therefore taxable - which they paid.

We are guilty of EBTs which were not contracts at all. The problem is that HMRC want to prove they were de facto contracts. I can't see how you can punish someone for not registering something that wasn't covered in the rules while not even hiding them. At worst it's a mistaken interpretation of the rules which the SFA should have brought to light sooner. Trouble is they didn't think it was against the rules either - till now.

The fairest thing I can see in this scenario is a clarification of the rules.

It's still a dual contract.

Also, it means that if we settle with HMRC we are equally as guilty as them. Therefore if HMRC accept the CVA we're no more culpable as we'll have settled.

This week anti-corruption squad officers were arrested for.....yep corruption! The world is a corrupt place right now and after 140 years of unblemished participation in Scottish Football we are being treated like we've been selling stolen baby parts for dog food. (some Chinese gang actually did this btw).
