European chances in two years

Recommended Posts

Yes, but but for a horrible Jelavic miss we'd have got through to the next round. He was as much to blame as indiscipline and tactics.

In the culpability queue for our pathetic European displays last season Jelavic would be near the end not the front.

Another point worth making about our European exploits this past season (if you want to start pointing fingers) is that Steven Whittaker let the team and the club down far more than Ally McCoist when he got himself sent off after 18 mins out in Sweden. The Bougie man didn't help much either by putting us down to 9 men with almost 30 mins still to play. It was just one of those nights where various events turned the table against us. Was it Ally's fault? Personally, I don't think it was, although I did criticise him heavily back then for playing a couple of players who weren't fully fit.

That tie was lost at Ibrox in my opinion. Even after Whittaker was sent off we were the better team and came away with a decent score draw away from home, not a great result but a result which should have been enough to see us through any tie had we done our job at home.

The ties against Maribor solidified for me my opinion on the manager and his coaching team. Certain players of course are not blameless either, although getting sent off, missing chances, getting booked i dont hold against them, the lack of effort and complacency, i do.

So, his miss had no bearing on anything. That's what you're saying?

How did Malmo and Maribor fare after beating us?

In Malmo's case they came very close to qualifying for the group stages against a team that had just won their sixth Croatian title in a row (7IAR now). I think we'd maybe have struggled against Zagreb ourselves tbh.

Anyone who saw us in Germany, Belfast and Blackpool pre-season couldn't have been shocked at our European exits. Absolutely woeful planning by McCoist.

Sadly those who raised issues so early and could see what was on the horizon were mocked.

Totally agree, but we needed better than a score draw in Sweden and Whittaker seriously dented our chances of getting the result we needed.

I cant disagree with that either but i dont hold him personally responsible mate, nor Bougherra.

For Calscot,

Results:

Rangers v Malmo lost 0-1

Malmo v Rangers Drew 1-1

Maribor v Rangers Lost 2-1

Rangers v Maribo Drew 1-1

Not very mixed mate to me, looks like 4 games, and no wins.

That is selective thinking and completely missing Zappa's point.

The scum had the treble won off the field and suddenly stumbled over Killie and Hearts respectively. They stumbled quite a few times over recent years. As we did over Falkirk. It seems that your cosmos revolves around Rangers. That point of view is in dire need of change.
