European chances in two years

Recommended Posts

Both Malmo and Maribor were absolutely pathetic. Dreadful opposition who our reserves should be beating never mind our first team. Pub team is perfectly apt. for both.

I always feel these kind of posts which rubbish the opposition and then Rangers for not thrashing them are from people who have never played a competitive match in their lives... Every team should be beating other teams but somehow they sometimes lose.

Football is a bit more complicated than that - the better team does not always win, and thankfully so. I would bet those two teams (who have the best records in their respective countries) are better than many teams that have defeated the likes of Aberdeen, Motherwell, Hibs etc. And yet we sometimes lose to those teams. Shit happens and it happens more often when a manager has been messed about in the transfer window by the board.

We should have learned from the fiasco when Walter was messed around - a manager who has the best record for Rangers in the Champions League / European Cup and Europa/UEFA Cup. Even he couldn't put a decent performance in those circumstances.

There was a combination of bad circumstances, bad luck and bad performances, but if you've followed Rangers for long, you'll know that's not exactly unusual for us in Europe.

What were they then? Contenders for the EL or CL? Or were they 2 very very small teams with tiny budgets that beat us with ease?

Malmo FF were the Swedish champions. They've won 19 league titles which is 6 more than IFK Gothenburg. Malmo and IFK are Sweden's most successful football clubs and actually amongst the most successful club's in Northern Europe. Nice 24k capacity stadium. Pub team? I don't think so.

NK Maribor were the Slovenian champions (and still are having won the title this season too). They've won the Slovenian league title 10 times including 7 in a row. They are the most successful football club in Slovenia. They're a team that I definitely thought we should have beaten, but we didn't despite having the chances. Pub team? I don't think so.

I love how you like to try and pick me up on everything Zappa, if you want to have credability you might want to do this with everybody on this site. You have shown over the last couple of weeks that you not being even with eveybody. You pick me up any time i post anything but allow certain people to have digs, make up stuff and be abusive.

Here we go with the drama queen nonsense. You run around telling people to stop posting "pish" and just to post the facts and as soon as someone fairly and rightly digs you up for doing the same yourself and being hypocritical all of a sudden we yet again get this nonsense about not being fair and people abusing you. You're cracking me up!

The current manager has already done much in Europe, with mixed results - some the best we have ever had and some pretty poor. I have no idea how he will fare if he is still manager when we next qualify to compete. I have no reason to believe he will do worse than can be reasonably expected for our squad, quality of opposition and circumstances at the time - honestly.

I think you better get the results book out mate and have a look at how many games the current manager has had in europe and the results.

You seem to be getting managers mixed up.

9 times out of ten the better team does win, the rich teams are the biggest and best, dress it up 11 v 11 how you like, the biggest and best should always win and more often than not, do. The SPL is one example but the world is full of these examples.

It was not the boards fault the players were not physically ready or properly motivated. Ally said all through the summer the players would be ready, they were not. He said the players have learned from their past mistakes, they didnt. He said he was happy with all his signings, are you saying he wasnt? Sounds to me like you are saying Ally doesnt understand living within or means?? Like Walter before him, always wanting to spend money, even when they should know we cannot afford it.

You also have Walter being messed around, a manager who was allowed to spend almost £40m over 4 years at a club playing in the mediocre SPL. C'mon mate?

The reasons were simple, it wasnt excuses it was valid reasons, reasons which too many Rangers fans are blinkered about.

Either you've got a selective memory or you haven't read everything I've written because I've been anything but supportive of TBK on the whole. I even wrote a short article about the Hokey Cokey that mocked them entering and withdrawing bids. You can find it on the main Gersnet site - http://www.gersnet.co.uk/

I wasn't supportive of TBK bid at all when they were planning to borrow money from Ticketus for their takeover plan and I openly said I thought it was a very bad idea to be borrowing more money from Ticketus.

When Kennedy teamed up with TBK after their deal with Ticketus went pear-shaped, I did hope that with Kennedy on board they could finally get a good amount of cash together to buy the club and I thought that that would have been a better option for the club than Bill Miller.

When Bill Miller dropped out TBK again had the opportunity to get a winning bid on the table, but they lost out to Green who I'm very skeptical about.

For what it's worth, when the last round of bids were on the table I wanted the anonymous bidder to win because I was told that it was someone with a very large amount of money and the best interests of the club at heart. Unfortunately that bid failed too and we are where we are now thanks to Duff & Phelps who I do not believe have the best interests of the club at heart.
