Withdrawing from Scottish Cup aka Challenge Cup Competition = Very Bad Idea

Recommended Posts

I've seen a lot of people saying that we should withdraw from the Scottish Cup for next season in protest at the SFA's unprecedented transfer embargo, so I had a look at the Scottish FA Handbook (rules & regulations).

I actually think it's a bad idea anyway from a financial point of view because we usually make money from the Scottish Cup and I would imagine that our sponsors might not be too chuffed if we withdrew from the competition.

After having looked at the FA Handbook though, I'm now absolutely certain that it would be a bad idea to withdraw from the Scottish Cup because I think the SFA would hammer us with further fines or sanctions.

Here's a couple of relevant points:

It seems that Article 33 is very clear and if we were to breach it, then it's almost certain that Regan's Kangaroo Court, sorry Judicial Panel at the SFA would hammer us again. Under normal circumstances such a breach might just get a fine, but given the situation we're already in with the SFA, then I think it would be a very very dangerous course of action indeed, potentially suicidal.

What about playing a team of youngsters (we might have to anyway)?

To raise more money could we instead create a small league of decent teams in Europe who also do not have European football next season playing home and away with the home teams keeping the money? I'm sure we could sell out 3 or 4 games midweek with decent opposition to make up for no European games, get the club some money, give our young players experience against European teams and give the fans something else than dull Scottish football or is this against Uefa rules?

It's a possibility!

Not sure if it's against the rules mate, but I don't think so. It's a great idea and my brother was talking about it last night. A wee competition with the likes of Liverpool, Marseille, Roma, Hamburg or teams like that could bring in a few quid!

I'm sure we could very quickly make ourselves ineligible.

Those rules don't apply to the fans.

We can withdraw at any time.
