Can we be the new Elgin City?

Recommended Posts

Simple question CJ, Div3 start from scratch and rebuild at least winning on the way or start from scratch SPL whored out for our name but struggling to get into the top 6 for years. Which scenario loses the fans quicker?

Because either way McGregor, Naismith, Davis, Edu, Boca, Goian, Laff, Aluko are all gone.

Struggling to get into the top six for years? What is that based on?

We've never finished lower than fifth in our puff, even when we were going through bad times before. There are no Aberdeen's or Dundee United's around now.

Bring in a decent manager, and plenty would be interested before anyone starts, and there is no reason why we couldn't build a good, young team capable of challenging for honours.

Aye, but with the transfer embargo, no money, potential points deductions, a governing body that is willing to twist the knife at every chance & don't forget the fact that Celtic have been more than happy in the past to offer our youngsters lucrative deals to jump ship.. finishing lower than 5th is a real possibility.

No decent manager is going to want a job with no money and a 12 month transfer ban so that's out the window it's Ally or nothing. We have to slash the budget so the best players go the young players will take you so far but to start with we win nothing and struggle badly.

Build a young team with what we will only have the young players we have we can't bring in more in unless you want to build a team of 17 year olds.

I have often questioned the logic of going to the 3rd Div. I believe that with current costs, the team would not survive.

However, after seeing the DR today, who've a "feature" on a possible team for next season with the youngsters etc I actually quite like the look of the team - with McCabe, Hutton, Ness, Perry, Fleck etc. I'm pretty sure those guys could stick around and do VERY well in the lower leagues.

There is also the prospect of the Scottish cup - a possibility of Europe maybe.

As for running costs, I think certainly 1/2 of Ibrox would be pretty much moth-balled for a couple of years. Avg attendances for the 3rd div are in the hundreds, never mind 10's of thousands. While I'm sure the Gers support would still turn out, it would be greatly reduced. Season ticket prices would also have to be reduced accordingly, as well as gate prices.

Extra revenue streams would need to be found. Possibly sharing the facilities @ MP with other teams/groups etc.

I think for the most part it is a fairy tale, but one that might just be believable!!!

I think this is a pretty damning verdict of the character of Rangers fans. 200,000 can spend over £100 a head to go to the city where the team are playing in a European final - that's over £20M spent, but when the club needs them in a less glamorous scenario they'll desert in droves.

It's hard for me to criticise as I'm too far away to attend games but I'm sure that if I was a season ticket holder I'd stick it out while in the lower divisions. If nothing else it would be a bit of a change from the usual overplayed fixtures.

I think it would be a lot more attractive if there was more brains in the SFL. Why do we have three divisions of 10? What can that possibly achieve except boredom? At worst it should have a division one with twelve teams and a division two of 18 teams.

If Sheffield Wednesday can average over 20k in Div One then surely if we have loyal fans then we should be able to double that - even just out of sheer sticking it to the SPL?
