A 4/5 year ban from Europe

Would our co-efficient fall away?

Three points about the coefficient and qualification for Europe:

  1. The Fiorentina example doesn't give us any help on how UEFA would view it as they were out of Europe from 2002 to 2007. On July 14, 2006 Fiorentina were relegated to Serie B due to their involvement in the 2006 Serie A match fixing scandal and given a 12 point penalty. However, on appeal, the team was reinstated to the Serie A, albeit with a 19 point penalty for the 2006-07 season. The team also lost their UEFA Champions League 2006-07 place. (Wikipedia).

However, if they take the same view as with the history of the Club, then one would think that any coefficient would remain intact. When Fiorentina came back into Europe in 2007/08 they had the the Country Part of the coefficient for the previous 5 seasons.

  2. Rangers coefficient has already fallen away. We are 113th with 2.05 points this season and ranked 50th over the past 5 seasons which are taken into account for the rankings. IF we were competing next season we are provisionally 74th (and Celtic 78th) because the run to Manchester in 2008 drops out of the picture. Since Manchester (when we were 9th for the season) we have dropped from 24th, to 28th, to 31st and 33rd.

As we know with Scotland 15th in 2011, there are still two places in the CL next season both starting in Q3 (Celtic are currently the top seeds as we were this season) and three in the UEFA League starting in the Q2, Q3 and Q4 (Cup Winners). This year Scotland is 18th meaning that if there are no changes to the access arrangements then in 2013/14 we would be down to one place in the CL (Q2) and three in the EL (2xQ2 and 1xQ3).

However, as with the team coefficients, in 2013 our run to to Manchester in 2008 drops out of the picture so from a country point of view we are provisionally 26th meaning that in 2014/15 our EL entrants would start in Q1 and Q2.

  3. IF Rangers are liquidated and start in SFL3 next season then we wouldn't be in a position to qualify from the SPL until 2015/16 at the earliest for the 2016/17 season in Europe by which time almost certainly we would have one team in the CL/Q2 and all our teams in the EL will have to start in Q1.

In that scenario the only way we would be in Europe before 2016/17 would be if we won the cup in 2014/15 when we would qualify for the EL in 2015/16 (Q2).

So in reality it is a 4/5 year ban from Europe.

and yet those who hate us will still happily stick the boot in,clearly not to benefit themselves but to have a cheap shot at the rangers whilst at their most vulnerable.

It's a point that is often lost on Rangers fans IMHO as well as others that it is important from the point of view of the coefficient that ALL Scottish teams do well in Europe.

The UEFA country ranking is computed by the sum of 5 coefficients in the last 5 years. To determine the participants in the Champions League and the Europa League the last year ranking is used, because each country should know at the start of the season how many places it disposes.

UEFA Team Ranking

The UEFA team coefficients are calculated as the sum of the number of points of each individual team, and 20% of the country coefficient. From 2004-2008 the contribution of the country coefficient was 33%, and before 2004 the contribution of the country coefficient was 50%.

For a detailed explanation see Bert Kassie's excellent site http://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/calc.html

Scottish teams benefited from Celtic's strong performances in 2002/03 and 2003/04 and Rangers' in 2005/06 and 2007/08 by getting two places in the CL in succeeding years and having to play less qualifying matches.

That's very good point BH; some of us have had dog's abuse for hoping Keltic(that IS the correct pronunciation) do well in Europe but there is a real danger that Scotland could lose her only CL qualifying spot. Edited by alexscottislegend

I regret to say that I have come close to physical abuse and have certainly taken a fair bit of verbal abuse and not all of it good natured either for making that very point.

So long as THEY don't win anything in Europe, all they are doing is making it better for the rest of us and vice versa.

All 53 countries in Europe get at least one CL qualifying spot but if you're below 47th i.e. in with the Faroes etc you start in Q1.

It really doesn't matter tbh if your team are in Qf Rd 1,2 or 3...if you are good enough you'll get there anyway. Malmo & Maribor managed to knock us out no problem.

I agree with your main point but not the specifics.

I was in Maribor and Malmo.

In Maribor a terrible second half defensive tactical blunder (going to 4-4-2) cost us dear and I firmly belive we would have won in Malmo even with 10 men had it it not been for that accident waiting to happen Bougherra who should never have been played when he was on his way out.

That said both of those teams managed a point a piece in the EL so it doesn't say a lot for us that we couldn't get past them.
