Rangers supporter becomes first fan to admit offence under new football hate laws

Recommended Posts

A RANGERS supporter yesterday became the first fan to admit an offence at an Old Firm game under new football laws.

Lorne Macleod pleaded guilty to branding Celtic fans â??paedophilesâ? before Sundayâ??s SPL match.

The 25-year-old was warned by police after he sang an offensive song while standing among Rangers supporters outside Ibroxâ??s South Stand, Glasgow Sheriff Court heard.

Macleod, from Inverness, admitted chanting the lyrics but denied hearing the warning. Jim Clark, defending, said he regretted his actions and had been â??caught up in the fervour of the pre-match atmosphereâ?.

Sheriff Alan Mackenzie ordered a proof of mitigation hearing, because he wants clarification over whether Macleod heard the police caution before sentencing him.

The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012 became law this month â?? with a maximum five-year jail term.

Another Rangers fan, Fraser Robertson, 18, pleaded not guilty to an unspecified offence.

Three other men appeared from custody for alleged violations of the new law.

Dylan Mackenzie, 19, William Robertson, 46, and James Donaldson, 20, all pleaded not guilty and were bailed.

Two more fans arrested on Sunday for offences under the new Act will appear at a later date.

Calling someone a paedo is illegal? That kills a LOT of jokes.

Two Rangers fans were marked out there, what club do the 'three other men' support?

There were 9 arrests at the match under the new legislation, but I dont have the breakdown between us and them.

Another 10 were arrested, mainly for drink related offences although there was one arrest for assault.

Typical Rhebel to spin it as only Rangers fans named when some simple research would have seen a more balanced response.

Any chance these guys could go to a Rangers game and support Rangers? Sing songs about Rangers?

We have some of our support that are obbessed with them as much as they are with us.
