Kick It Out - Focus on Faith

Recommended Posts

Barry McGuigan will lead a debate on how faith, football and sport more widely can co-exist at Kick It Outâ??s inaugural â??A Focus on Faithâ?? forum at Birmingham Cityâ??s St Andrewâ??s Stadium on 11 April.

Former world champion boxer McGuigan will be flanked by fellow speakers, ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joe Jackson, a football development co-ordinator and devout Christian, Alex Goldberg, Chair of The FAâ??s Faith in Football Group and a consultant to the JDC Europe, the largest Jewish humanitarian organisation in the world, and Peter Allen, club chaplain at League One side Sheffield Wednesday.

The event, which is free of charge with refreshments provided, will bring these speakers together with people from different backgrounds and religions to look into how faith groups can best use the game as an engagement tool.

Aisling Cohen of Three Faiths Forum, an educational programme bringing diverse communities together, Altaf Kazi from As-Suffa, an Islamic centre catering for the needs of the Muslim Community, and representatives from Sporting Khalsa, a predominantly Sikh football club, will all contribute to the discussion.

During his career, McGuigan brought together Catholics and Protestants at the height of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, and is aware of the powerful role sport can play in uniting people.

â??My background as a Catholic who married a Protestant was a symbol that communities could integrate and live side-by-side,â? said McGuigan, who will be reflecting on his past experiences during the forumâ??s opening address.

Religion should have nothing to do with the state.

What we need is a secular politics and no more funding of seperate schools by the state.

If you want to pay for it, then do so, but the state should not sponsor bigotry, as it seems to at the moment.

We could also get rid of the religious lords. Never can there be a more pointless appontment, other than to continue this "fairness for all" myth.
