Broadfoot Interview on paycuts

Recommended Posts

I thought this is worth posting, a wee reminder what the guys really did:

KIND-HEARTED Kirk Broadfoot has revealed he is now living on his savings but was more than happy to take a 75 percent wage cut to help keep Rangers alive.

The Scottish international was one of more than 11 first-team players who agreed to take just 25 percent of their wages for the remainder of the season, while other lower earners took 50 and 25 percent cuts to help prevent casualties in other areas of the club.

Broadfoot, who became a new dad, admitted he couldn't have lived with himself if his boyhood heroes and had gone from administration to the wall.

Broadfoot said: "I have taken a 75 percent cut until the end of the season. The money I will be left with won't pay my bills but I am lucky because I have made some decent money in my time at Rangers.

"I have been able to save and invest in one or two things. I have tried to look after the pounds and pence. I have got a bit of money behind to see my family through this next two to three months and so I am lucky enough on that front, but it is not just about me.

"It is about every single player in our dressing room, all the players and management staff have played their part.It is not about individuals because we have made this gesture as a team.

"We are all in this together and it will be together, along with the fans that we will come through this difficult time. The most important thing throughout all this wasn't individuals but preserving the long-term future of Rangers Football Club."

The administrators, Duff and Phelps, hope they can find a new owner for the club by the end of the week.

admittedly it's from the express but still. http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/308201

Nice one Kirk

The money I will be left with won't pay my bills

While I think what these guys have done is highly commendable, the above statement makes me wonder what his monthly bills are like.

I'm sure he will now be on £2-3k a week (maybe more...) - that's still a helluva lot more that most ordinary folk are on PER MONTH!!!

Yes but like everyone, we live to our means. His house will cost more, his cars, normal household bills plus a young family.

How many "ordinary" folk would take a 75% paycut willingly for their employer? I KNOW footballers earn lots but in a sense they are paid market rate for their job, like most of us are.

All very true....but pulling in approx £10k per month (give or take a couple of £k). What sort of life his he living??? I've got a nice house (IMHO), a wife, young family, cars to run and messages to buy and various other monthly bills all on approx £3k per month (inc my wife's salary).

These guys might find finances a wee bit tight with a 75% cut....Pretty mush every normal person could simply NOT survive. A 75% wage cut wouldn't even come close to paying ma mortgage!!!

I think all this is missing the point. It's not about what you earn or I earn. It's just a reminder that these boys aren't on EPL type wages, that they do have loyalty to their club.

Your bills will be worked in to your family budget. I'm sure his is the same, his house will be in accordance with his earnings (he'll have a mortgage I'm sure).

I know that Broadfoot's house would have cost him in excess of 500k and he has a BMW Z5 - he lives just along the road from my Mum.

Not sure what the mortgage is on a house that value but it will be a chunk of change I would have thought.

Regardless, as Bluemazza says, it is the sentiment that counts in this instance. The big fella may never be the greatest player but it still is a noble gesture.

I think you answered it yourself there mate. He will probably be on that salary now (Around £3-4k pcm), his bills will surely only be around that mark (I assume) but like he said above he has investments & savings which is where most of the other 6-8k (another assumption) he would normally earn would go. Now he can afford his bills, but not his investments & I assume he will be relying on his savings for baby stuff & luxuries. While this is a significant & admirable sacrifice for the good of the club I do agree with Darthter's point that if any average person took a 75% pay cut it would mean certain homelessness or having to quit.

It doesn't take away from the fact of what they have done for our club. :D They are the people & we are forever in their debt ;)

Don't want to burst bubbles or rock cradles but footballers nowadays are obscenely paid bucket loads a money that's why it costs an arm and a leg to go watch a game....I for one won't weep when it becomes 'difficult' for them, they'll always move on when they want MORE, they even employ 'agents' to 'fix' them a deal.

Watch the exodus in the summer.

Lets get real....Broadfoot would probably have been on about £10k per week. That means he'll be on around £2.5K PER WEEK or £10k pcm. That is a helluva lot of cash to play a couple of games of football per week.

While I do agree that it is admirable that these guys have taken a 75% wage cut for the benefit of the club, being honest their not exactly gonna starve or miss their mortgage payments etc....
