Ibrox return on offer to Smith: Former boss in line for Rangers comeback

Recommended Posts

Walter Smith will be offered the chance to return to Rangers as director of football if Scots businessman Brian Kennedy wins the battle for control of the club.

Edinburgh-born Kennedy, who owns rugby union outfit Sale Sharks, is one of the seven parties to have declared an interest in purchasing the beleaguered Ibrox club ahead of Fridayâ??s bid deadline.

Sportsmail understands the man whose personal fortune is estimated to be £250million, sees the return of Smith as a cornerstone of his master plan if he gets the keys to the door.

With Rangers currently in turmoil after the disastrous ownership of Craig Whyte, the club faces numerous challenges in the months ahead, even if it shortly lands in new hands and emerges from administration

The position of current manager Ally McCoist, who reportedly met with Kennedy in Cheshire last week, would not be under threat, however.

Kennedy, 51, very much views MCoist as the right man in the dugout to get the club challenging again, with Smith the link between him and the boardroom.

Smith is expected to be confirmed as a trustee of the Rangers Fans Fighting Fund this week â?? a scheme aimed at keeping the financially-stricken club afloat.

The man who left the club after guiding it to three SPL titles in a row last year was recently linked with the Wolves job after Mick McCarthy was sacked.

It remains to be seen if he would be prepared to return to Ibrox for a third spell â?? albeit in a less visible role than that of manager â?? although he has recently spoken of his dismay at seeing the club in its current state.

Kennedy and Paul Murrayâ??s Blue Knights are the only two parties to have spoken publicly about their desire to become the next owners of Rangers

How they can say this without knowing who the new owners is beyond me. The new owner might come in and sack the whole backroom and managment staff in one big swoop. Unlikely, i know, but still. This is total guess work.

If Kennedy thinks McCoist is the right man in the dugout ii just prey he doesn't get control of the club. Ally has been the worse manager in the history of our great club. I would be 100% in favour of Ally being kept on in PR but not as manager!

Old yellow teeth will reading that thinking PLEASE, PLEASE LET THAT BE TRUE! The media will be backing Kennedy now!:ffs::redface:

I know we go round and round with this, but ffs, can we give Ally a chance in a club with less of a shit storm happening? We do not know full details of what it has been like in Ibrox during Whyte's reign, or the potential strain on McCoist. To declare him our worst manager with all this stuff going on is harsh.

Although, I remember the shit McLeish got too when he was in charge.
