McCarthy had been in charge at Molineux since 2006, but saw his side hammered 5-1 at home by West Brom on Sunday. The result plunged Wolves into the Premier League relegation zone and prompted fans to protest outside the ground after the match. Former Republic of Ireland coach McCarthy apologised for his team's performance and insisted he was the right man to lead Wolves to safety. However, the Wolves board have opted to dispense with McCarthy and place the task of securing top-flight survival in the hands of another man. "The club will be issuing a fuller statement in due course." McCarthy had led Wolves to promotion from the Championship in 2009 before keeping the club in the Premier League for two years in a row. Wolves also enjoyed a positive start to the current campaign after collecting seven points from their opening three matches. However, the club slowly tumbled down the table and had won just once in 11 Premier League matches. Birmingham City also knocked Wolves out of the FA Cup last month following a 1-0 win at Molineux in a third-round replay. Think the board had no choice after recent results and yesterday in particular. Actually like McCarthy as a man but couln't see him turning things around. The former Rangers and Everton boss was considering whether to come out of retirement to take charge of their bid for Barclays Premier League survival. Smith was offered the chance to take over from axed Mick McCarthy for the final 13 games of the season. But he has now decided to turn down the opportunity. The club have already been snubbed by a string of managers in their hunt to replace McCarthy - including Steve Bruce, Alan Curbishley, Gus Poyet and Brian McDermott. They then pinned their hopes of dodging the drop on Smith, who left Scottish giants Rangers at the end of last season. Survival bid: Smith will look to steer Wolves towards safety in the Barclays Premier League Smith had looked set to agree to a deal for the remainder of the campaign, with the option of an extended stay to be discussed once they know what division they will start in next season. After talks with Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey, they agreed that Smith can work with the existing backroom staff. Smith knows Moxey from his original stint with Rangers between 1991 and 1998. Moxey ran a basketball franchise for the Scottish club before moving on to fill the role of commercial manager. Smith has previous experience of managing in the Barclays Premier League during four years at Everton. He was briefly Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United at the end of the 2003-04 season. Smith was also manager of Scotland for two years before returning to Ibrox in 2007 for the second time when he led the Glasgow club to three successive titles and the 2008 UEFA Cup final. I see Smith is just the latest to turn down the post. Oh dear. edit. SSN now saying he wasn't actually been offered the post, but asked if he would be interested.
