I didn't force transfer - Jelavic

Recommended Posts

It could also be said then that if Jelavic had said "I want to stay, but the President wants to sell me" then that compares with the original statement.

But that statement makes one of them out to be a liar.

My suggested statement really was just highlighting that it COULD be the case that they are BOTH correct with what they said.

A BITTER war of words last night exploded between Rangers and Nikica Jelavic.

Gers' chief operations officer Ali Russell accused Jelavic of lying over his move to Everton.

Jelavic denied he'd demanded a move from Ibrox and said: "I didn't tell Rangers I was desperate to leave or wanted to leave. It is strange to hear this.

"Two clubs made an agreement and that was that. The club decided."

But Russell claimed the 26-year-old demanded a move to the Premiership.

He said: "Nikica told Ally McCoist personally on Monday he wanted to move to the English Premier League, so to suggest he didn't want to leave Rangers is nonsense.

"Nikica, and indeed his family, were widely quoted throughout January about playing in England and his agent also communicated the fact he wanted to achieve a lifetime ambition and test himself in the Premier League.

"He wants to earn a starting place for Croatia at Euro 2012 and felt a move to England's top flight would help him achieve that.

"Nikica was a terrific player for Rangers and we wish him well at Everton, but to suggest he was forced to leave Ibrox is just ridiculous."

Meanwhile, St Johnstone chairman Steve Brown insists Gers did not come close to their valuation of Fran Sandaza.

Gers made a late move for the Spanish striker, but the deal never got off the ground.

Brown had placed a £300,000 price tag on Sandaza's head.

But last night Brown revealed: "Rangers didn't make an offer. They made inquiries, but it didn't move from their position of a few weeks ago.

"They knew our figure was £300,000 and they were quite a bit away from that.

"There was no indication Rangers were willing to pay money for Fran.

"Rangers knew our expectations and didn't even come close.

"We thought we might miss out on the top six without Fran, so the financial fall-out would have been quite big.

"We didn't think we would lose Fran to Rangers, but we thought a Championship club might come in for him.

"It was made clear all along we wanted to keep Fran. He's our top scorer and speculation is part and parcel of the transfer window, but now we can move on."

I just think that anyone at Rangers using the 'lame' excuse of Euro '12 a reason for Jelavic wanting out is ridiculous. If Jelavic was good enough he would make any squad in that competition. I remember that same 'excuse' being flouted from Rangers when Cuellar left us. Fact is these players were sold to cash in and subsequently sold for profit and profit only.

I believe Rangers have become a selling club who make up the proverbial lame excuse for it and some players namely Jelavic has come out and said it.

Jelavic could have kept his mouth shut and basked in his EPL move he 'so wanted' according to certain quarters but he's not that sort. The situation at Ibrox is in question - more so after the recent goings on.

And I for one wouldn't use quotes from daily rags like the 'sun' it shines out from it's arse.

That indeed we have become a selling club and we have now for some time!

We should be a selling club G4L if it's done right we can make some money at it, problem is no one at Ibrox seems to know the right way to do it.

One of the main factors in buying a player should be can we make a profit on him and if we don't think we can then we shouldn't buy him probably not what we want to hear but it's the times we live.

It seems to me that the truth lies somewhere in between and all parties are trying to word it to let them off the hook with the fans.

Basically I think Jela wanted to leave and Whyte wanted the money to help balance the books due to lack of CL income - but neither of them want to admit it as it rankles with the fans.

If Whyte wanted Jela to stay he would have had to stay whether he liked it or not and so his statement is erroneous.

I think Jelavic wasn't too bothered about the ACTUAL move until an EPL mainstay (Everton) came for him and then he started to play hard-ball. It seems West Ham didn't really light his fire.

There's always a lot of double speak to the press and I think we should be careful of knee jerk reactions when it happens and learn to read between the lines. Basically, nothing said to the press is the whole truth and most of it is spin.
