12 arrests at Old Firm match but police praise fans for good behaviour and no sectarian singing

Dec 29 2011

POLICE have praised football fans for their behaviour at last night's Old Firm match and said there were no reports of sectarian singing throughout the game.

Celtic won the match 1-0 at home against Rangers, putting them at the top of the Scottish Premier League.

Strathclyde Police said 12 arrests were made in and around Celtic Park but none were sectarian-related. The arrests were said to be a result of "low-level offending".

Assistant Chief Constable Campbell Corrigan, event commander, said the match had been an "Old Firm fixture at its best".

He said: "There were no reports of sectarian singing recorded by police and I would like to thank both sets of fans for their continuing commitment to reducing this type of behaviour.

"Various police operations were ongoing prior to the kick-off, including spot checks on buses and coaches travelling to the game and the number of people found with alcohol on board was very low.

"Additionally, the level of drunkenness and disorder at licensed premises was significantly lower, which is testament to the licence holders in the pubs and clubs of Glasgow taking their responsibilities very seriously and we'd like to thank them for that.

"It was a great example of an Old Firm fixture at its best, with high drama and good sportsmanship."

Earlier this month, new laws designed to crack down on religious sectarian hate crime were pushed through the Scottish Parliament.

The SNP used its majority at Holyrood to pass the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Bill despite appeals from opposition parties for the legislation to be scrapped.

Two offences will be created by the legislation, targeting sectarian behaviour in and around football matches and on the internet. Those convicted could spend as long as five years in prison and be banned from football grounds.

I guess they all had ear plugs in when go home ya huns was being sung.

If you heard it then you should report it to the police and ask them what they are going to do about it.

Why BH if they can't be arsed doing their job right why should I bother getting involved. Reporting something to the police that they don't want to get involved with is a total waste of time, I've been down that road before.

I heard us fucking the pope and the Vatican so I guess this legislation really is a load of shite.

Can you really blame them Danny. We listen to them stick fingers up to the police, SPL and the authorities week after week with nothing done. I'm surprised the Rangers support has kept itself in check for so long.

I understand your frustration but if you reported it in writing (or by email) then they would HAVE to investigate it, particularly in the wake of the OBB. Previously they could have said that it was not breach of the peace but now "offensive behaviour" is specifically caught by the new Act. I suspect that you would not be alone.

What? If enough fans report 'Go Home Ya Hun's' as being 'offensive' then, we can stop it?

"Enough fans" aren't the issue, one would be enough.

The police would have to deal with it in terms of the OBB IF:

it is behaviour "that a reasonable person would be likely to consider offensive" AND "the behaviour is or would be likely to incite public disorder".

I found this definition of a reasonable man in Scotland:

reasonable man – the reasonable man is just a man but more than that, he is not rash, he is not stupid, he does not lose control of himself (unless sufficiently provoked), he is not unusually clever. It’s used as an objective standard for what a reasonable person of general abilities will do. Can be altered by the discretion of the court.

Note, however, that the fact that you might consider yourself to be a reasonable person doesn't matter, what matters is whether or not a police officer takes the view that this mythical person would find the chant offensive etc and the procurator fiscal considers that there is a good chance that he could secure a conviction and/or that it would be in the public interest to prosecute the alleged offence.

....well...I'm Scottish to start with, there's a plus? also I'm not unusually clever, only sometimes (but that doesn't count) I'm certainly lot stupid, (but ma catholic granny keeps telling me to stop signing in to Rangers internet sites) could that effect my status? Also I do lose control from time to time when playing 'solitude'...but that's only me?

Can I make that complaint then BH?
