Offensive Behaviour Bill passed today by Parliament

Recommended Posts

I'm prepared to wait, you on the other hand seem happy to call working class 'spongers'. An offensive term used by sickening right-wing politicians to demonise their targets of folk benefiting from state benefits.

I'm rather worried that someone who may, or may not, I don't know your status, works within the police force of this country, is coming onto a social site using this type of language. More importantly that trying to score points from each other, it does increase my worries that the police are indeed PRE-judging their targets and my original concerns will be found to be correct, that the working class, not only the unemployed, will be the main victims of this useless and hopeless law.

You've even admitted that you don't understand the law, so on what basis are you arresting people, other than your already stated bias against folks on benefits????

You should be ashamed of yourself and the only reason I'm not going to your employers is because there's little chance of anything being done about such a person in the ranks of the police in this country. It seems to be encouraged more than calmed.

Sorry but that is nonsense. YOU are now pre-judging Gazza_8 because he is in the police force and said that most being arrested are unemployed. I would think (though I dont have the stats) that the statistics would back that up. Logically it would make sense to me that most of those being arrested for most offences are those who are jobless. That doesnt mean the police are prejudiced, merely that Gazza_8 gave you his personal experience from being in the workforce.

To then suggest that he (or the police) is/are willingly attempting to prejudge or pre-determine targets is, to me at least, nonsense.

Yes, there are some policeman who are less than honest but, in my opinion the vast majority simply want to do their job. Sure, this law makes it difficult given the less than clear nature of it, but all they want to do is their job. The reality is that arresting people actually makes their job more of a pain in the arse than not arresting them. I would think that mostly when they arrest someone they are thinking "I wish he/she hadnt done that as I now have to complete all this bloody paperwork".

Also, why should he be ashamed of himself ? I am sure that he wouldnt bother if you went to his employers. Why ? Because he hasnt done anything wrong. IMO you are taking a massive quantum leap here because all he did was give you what his personal arresting experience is, not that he goes looking for that type of person but rather they seem to seek him, and his colleagues, out.

It seems that, rather than pre-judging their targets, YOU are actually pre-judging the police in general but, more particularly, Gazza_8 in particular.

If anyone should be ashamed of themselves it should be you for casting aspersions at someone you simply dont know and for something he didnt even say. At what point did he say he wants to arrest unemployed people ? He didnt, he said those are the majority of the people he arrests because of what they do, not because he wants to.

From reading your post you have a pre-judged, pre-determined assessment of the police.

The quantum leap you make in terms of Gazza_8 and "going to his employers" is, quite frankly, laughable.

I don't know what arguement I've meant to have lost Gazza? I agree with you that being personal is a weak form of arguement, but I'd have to say, it's usually the person that starts being personal that is the weakest.

As someone with congenital heart disease and on benefits, I take the spongers remarks as a personal attack and I thinik I should be able to defend myself against these 'ideas' created by expense account fraudsters politicains. It is certainly a good way to deflect public opinion away from being the centre of attention, unwelcome attention, and for the most part I'd say it's been rather successful. The global economic crises is now indeed the fault of the unemployed.???

Super_Ally: What I say about the prison population is not an assumtion, it is a recorded fact. You even admit it unwittingly by your next point, but surely the theft within the bluecollar section of society is beyond the ken of most policemen, and even if they do get charged, they have the resorces ti wangle a good lawyer to escapre prison. Even if they do get a prison sentance, they are usually fast tracked into the 'Holiday Camp' section of the prioson population.

I believe in socialist principles, although I'm aware that is not a popular set of values to hold these days and most not agreeing with them tend to attack and belittle anyone espousing these values. I'm extremely worried about this new law as it directly attacks a working class pastime, namely watching football and there will be very little defence for anyone brought to court on these charges.

I don't normally get myself involved with tub-thumping arguements on the internet as folks points are very ratherly addressed by the protaganists, so I've said my bit and however you want to defend the politicians that create these laws, good luck to you. I've said my peace on this matter.

Being on benefits doesnt make you a sponger though Dutchy. It seems to me that your being on benefits is legitimate, warranted and necessary. I would like to think that Gazza_8 is getting at those who are conning the system, of which there are plenty !! I have some in my own family and, believe me, I am even now close to reporting them because it galls me.

But you being on benefits doesnt make you a sponger.

Not sure Gazza_8 is defending the politicians but merely saying that the police will attempt to uphold the law regardless of social status of the offender. Vague law though it is.....

I've worked at a lot of Celtic games and heard their fans shouting "hun bastard" and "orange bastard" and haven't jailed them. People get wound up at football games and I usually give them the benefit of the doubt. So yes, in some cases you're right S_A but not every cop/steward is like that.

I'm more likely to jail someone for saying "fenian"outside the dancing on a Saturday night. :D

Even that annoys me though (not you specifically Gav) because I think, in reality, any offence to someone being called a "hun" or "fenian" is mock offence. In my opinion at least.

I think what Gav said jokingly highlights exactly what people should be worried about. The way the new legislation is so openly worded lends itself to major problems down the line in terms of people being arrested for something they probably shouldn't be arrested for.

Like most professions I am sure the vast majority are fine. Just a bit worrying you could get a criminal record for the bias or ignorance of 1 steward or copper who is having a bad day or is just an arse. When I say ignorance, I mean in terms of knowing what is or isn't sectarian. It seems the perception of many that anything Rangers sing is bigotted when that clearly isnt the case.
