stewarty 2,123
25 Novermber 1989 I was an 8 year old Rangers daft boy being taken by his Dad and his mate (sadly no longer with us, RIP Billy Lowrie) to Ibrox for the very first time. It was a foggy day in Glasgow but that did nothing to dampen the spirits. We stopped into the Stadium Bar pre-match to soak up the atmosphere and banter. I got into a conversation with a punter about Maradona's Hand of God goal v England and had the whole thing bang to rights. Asked if I was going to be a referee when I grew up? My Dad, always razor sharp in these scenarios: "nae chance, I married his mother!" Off to the match and a fine 3-0 win against Dunfermline Athletic. It was Ray Wilkins last ever game for Rangers before moving to QPR, an emotional day. I still remember his through ball to MoJo for the opening goal. Class player. Two more goals followed from Terry Butcher and then Super Ally. Situated high up in the Main Stand, I joined in as the entire stadium sang "Super Ally, Super Ally o-way o-way o-way". The naivete of youth - they were in fact singing "Super Ray, Super Ray o-way o-way o-way". Wilkins left the pitch in tears having been substituted in the second half. He did so to a standing ovation. The reason these memories came flooding back today? Well, I take my two boys to their first ever Rangers game tomorrow. Rangers v Dunfermline Athletic. Our Manager? My boyhood hero, Alistair McCoist. My eldest is 8 years old, just a couple of months older than I was at the time. Hopefully tomorrow creates similar memories for him and his brother. WATP!

craig 5,199
Cheers! Gonna stick a couple of quid on a 3-0 win too. What can go wrong? I just hope the outcome is better than my kids 1st Rangers game..... last November, Gers riding high, unbeaten domestically all season...... home to a poor Hibs team, 90 minutes later and pumped 3-0.... trudged home gutted !
Guest Dutchy
I'll say good luck to you for your 3-0 prediction, even though I'm going for double that, 6-0. Due all the injury problems I've been reading that they're having, it could be close to that. Enjoy Stewarty and we Stewarties.
Gazza_8 233
I remember this game and I wasn't even at it. Like yourself Stewarty, I was 8 at that time and my Grandpa was looking after me the day we played Dunfermline at Ibrox. He was right into his junior football so off we went to see Yoker play someone instead. I can't remember what the score was but remember getting back into the car at FT and sticking on the radio and hearing we had won 3-0. What I remember from watching the highlights of the Rangers game is it being Ray Wilkins last game for us and the horrific fog that settled. Those are proper memories.

54andcounting 0
Talking of memories.....this isn't about 1989 but 1991. I had been taking my first son to Ibrox for many years then started to take my 2nd son who was 8 at the time to some games during the 1990-91 season, the last game you'll all remember was v the sheep and 'they' only needed a draw to secure the title. Anyway...tickets for that game were gold and I managed to get a couple the day before the game. As you know, the excitement and build up to that game was like nothing before. On the morning of the match I said "Right son, let's get ready" only for my younger to plead "Am I going too?" Two tickets, three Bears, well what do you do? I took both of them in the car to Ibrox with the intention they get the tickets and I look for another for myself! Sure enough, park the car, get the boys safely to the turnstile, tell them to meet me here after the game, then I go look for a ticket.....I tried, I tried and I tried, could I get a ticket? Could I f**k. The match has started by now and I'm still trying to get a ticket...'Any tickets mate?' 'Hi mate, got a ticket there?' Hopeless...the roars from inside the Stadium would make the hairs on your neck stand up...15 minutes after kick off, and still no ticket? F**k it...back to the car and listen on the radio....back to the car, and SHITE!!! I've got a TICKET alright...a f**kin' PARKING TICKET!!! Not a problem, Rangers done the biz, and the boys had a great day.

Also a good bit of emotional blackmail when you get on a bit & they try to pap you in a care home!
