Is the Internet > the Media?

Recommended Posts

It's true news media has changed dramatically since the inception of the www, especially the press and it's a fair supposition that they have indeed gone down to the 'all bloggers welcome' path to their, and the general publics detriment.

On the other side of the media's influence. If anything could be done to lessen the effect of programmes like X-factor and Big Brother, please someone do it.

Unfortunately, I think the internet contirbutes to these poor programmes and as a whole I suspect this is a government tactic to put a stop to, or at least stall the more extreme items on the net, thus hampering all our opportunities to excercise 'free choice'.

Dumbing down the proles with chemicals damaging braincells and mind-numbingly addictive drivel on the TV? They wouldn't do that! They wouldn't try to keep the proles under permanent sedation! Never!

You really do have to wonder sometimes. I remember once counting about 23 pages devoted to that horrible coobag of a woman Jade Goody in an edition of The Sun newspaper and couldn't believe my eyes. That bitch got more fucking page space than Princess Diana or the Diana investigations ever did. But then, we're not really supposed to be too heavily exposed to important subjects. Better to fill everyone's heads with fucking mince about Big Brother, the X-Factor and fucking pish game shows!

Apologies for the bad language!

Thanks and don't apologise for the bad language in this case. I get apoplectic with rage just thinking about what you said - and I agree with you!

It just seems to me there's been a reduction in the last 10 years in the quality of the media, coinciding neatly with the rise of Internet content - and now broadcasters and newspapers who once reported pure facts and kept news grounded are now willing to report anything to compete with said Internet bloggers etc. We may well be suffering from this, as I'm sure timmy possibly is too - and it's given rise to feeling like we're being targeted. Because we possibly are - maybe not because of an anti Rangers agenda, but because we're a good target and talking about us gets hits and viewers.

Just like if some tabloid IRA-focused Celtic programme was to be broadcast, it too would be lapped up by the masses.

I suppose that makes us bloggers, forum users etc culpible.

Price you pay for a democracy I guess.

It's an interesting concept and I'd argue the dumbing down of the media (or at least the more quality sections of it) is just part and parcel of people wanting their information yesterday and in small, easy-to-swallow portions.

In many ways, I'm surprised that the opposite hasn't been true - i.e. that one or two platforms (or certainly journalists) haven't improved in quality directly because they are now competing with everyone (including foreign media).

There are still plenty of good journalists out there. Unfortunately, they're just difficult to find in a sea of chaff.
