Why is Naismith being allowed to play for Scotland with an injury?

Recommended Posts

According to the beeb, he had to take painkillers to be able to play on Saturday and I'm wondering why this should be allowed. He's a crucial part of our team and I don't see why the club should allow him to risk worsening his hip injury by playing on Saturday and I don't think he should be allowed to play tonight either. What the hell's going on when players are being allowed to risk an injury they're carrying and struggling with being made worse so they can play for the national team? If a player is injured then he shouldn't even be in the national team squad never mind taking painkillers so he can play.

I asked this question last week when the starting XI was announced to face Czech Republic. A few people on here mentioned that he could barely walk at the end of the Aberdeen game. I automatically thought he'd pull out of the Scotland squad but was shocked to see him named in the starting XI and again tonight.

I hate these painkilling injections because in the long run it makes injuries worse.

Surely the players have the last say if they want to play? If he wants to play for his country that badly (and I think he is needed tonight) and wants to take injections then good on him. You get others who pull out of the squad with a broken toe nail..............

In a sense I agree johnny, but what if taking painkillers to play through an injury ends up causing the player to be sidelined for a couple of months or something? When a club pays millions to buy a player and pays them a huge salary I think it should be up to the club to have the final say and if a player is injured he really shouldn't be playing at all.

I can see that side as well mate, but the club will have insurance for these things, albeit missing a top player from your team might be damaging to winning trophies. It can also be a short career and some players think playing for your country is a top honour or some might want to collect as many caps as possible and/or improve themself playing different national teams.

I think it was a knock on the hip, could be wrong,so you wouldn't imagine any long term injury caused by playing while using painkillers.Just the same as anybody that has suffered a bad back, you take pain killers and keep working/moving.

He was sidelined with a hip injury last season Ian, so I assumed that the same problem had flared up again?

Zappa, you could be correct mate as I don't know the extent of the injury,I'm only guessing. However as Johnny said it must come down to the player to decide what he wants to do. Hopefully he has made the correct decision and by taking pain killers he is comfortable with that.
