Birmingham Post re Cuellar

Recommended Posts

2255: FOOTBALL - Rangers boss Ally McCoist hopes to complete a deal to re-sign Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar well before the weekend. Speaking after the 2-0 friendly win at Blackpool, McCoist says: "The ball is in Carlos's court. We hope to hear from him sooner or later."

From the BBC sportsday thing.

People say he has agreed terms but a payoff is the problem.

Mirror reporting Cuellar has snubbed our offer to see out his Villa contract.

Meanwhile a few supposedly 'in-the-know' people on Twitter (agents I'd imagine) are saying he will join us if he can agree a pay-off from his current club.

More disgusting and unacceptable greed. The guy costs them 7.8M, they give him a signing on fee and £6M wages plus bonuses over 3 years; they manage to get a couple of million back for him to sign for a club he likes where he'll probably get a signing on fee and earn about another £6M over four years - yet he also wants a payoff?

What is it with these guys? The average Joe paying their wages will likely earn around £1M over their whole lifetime yet even "nice guys" like Cuellar want to play hardball to squeeze them for more, despite their already massive incomes.

All the clubs really need to get together and agree some kind of transfer code so that if one club refuses to pay some silly demand from an agent, another club doesn't come in and do it. Then if anyone breaks the code, the rest stop trading with them. They have lost all power to the players due to a lack of cooperation and they are misspending their fan's money as a result.

Basically we need rules between clubs that will stop the wage spiral.

Sounds like evil agent work where they try it on for every last penny they can squeeze.

That's one possibility. Another one is that the whole thing's a big fat porky.

I do agree but i think it would be near on impossible to pull something like this off. There are too many dodgy agents out there and fraud would be a bigger part of the game again

Or it's because he's on 40k and has to accept a wage cut of 15k minimum so wants to recoup that.

It is greed to an extent, but if he's entitled to it, he's entitled to it.

What calscot says in 100% spot on and with everything that is inspired with capitalist greed is rationalised with these people have to look after their families, etc., etc., etc. So the feck do the punters that have to pay an absolute fortune to see them play. Is there ever any offer of a refund when they play shit? Of course not, that's not the nature of greed.

It's one of the reasons that I want us to bring more and more younsters through. If the money is going to continue for players like this, then we'd be much better to take this approach and if they are any good, we could sell them for a hefty profit, because we will still need to buy some 'experienced' players to show them the way.

If we could do that and at least break even every year, obviously keeping up with the inflationery presures of greed year on year, I'd be happy. The survival of Rangers FC is much more important than what Prima Donna we're selling our souls down the river for next.

There are decent people about and they can earn a decent living at a club such as ours.

That's my take on it too if the stories are true that the pay-off is the only stumbling block (which they may or may not be).

It's not as if Cuellar has handed in a transfer request. He didn't ask to be sold to a team in a far poorer league where he'll make less money.

I can't see how he's "entitled" to any pay-off; if he is why aren't Villa just paying it?

Let's talk about entitlement...

The fans are entitled to a lot more respect than they get from these players, but they rarely get it.

You could could say the fans are "entitled" to a refund if their team plays shit so why aren't the players coughing up?

You're "entitled" to ask everyone you give a lift to contribute to the petrol and running of your car. But do you hassle every friend who gets in your car for every penny you think you deserve and maybe a bit more? Do you stop half way there and threaten to kick them out if they don't pay? You may be entitled but every friend you have will soon see you as a bit of a money grabbing, miserable git - just as we should see these players in that way.

We have a lot of entitlements of varying degrees, but I can't understand why someone ruthlessly demanding every last entitlement despite being treated exceptionally well is something some people think is somehow ok.

In the end it's your money guys and it's a bit like Cuellar coming round and saying to you all, "Give me more of your money out of your wallet right now, I'm entitled to it to make me richer while I don't give a shit about you struggling to pay for a season ticket or Sky package on top of trying to give your kids a decent future."

This DOES NOT happen often by the majority of good people on honest wages. Plenty of people take a pay cut for a year or more to move to a job that will be more rewarding in other ways - especially if they are already rich and the new wage makes immensely comfortable living.

Greed is greed, no matter how you try to twist it. For those who are Protestants on here, doesn't the bible say that it is a deadly sin?

Cal, it's not the players fault that they get a paid a lot of money. If the clubs in the top leagues weren't given as much cash in TV and sponsorship deals the players wouldn't get paid as much. You make it sound like footballers are thieves when they aren't. I do think footballers are paid too much, but I don't agree with making out as if the players are stealing from the fans when the real robbers in this world worth getting angry about are the banking, oil, energy and war industries, yet nobody seems to bother about them raping us all.
