Why not forget about Cuellar and buy Bartley instead?

Recommended Posts

Im being greedy but I think we should splash out on both and we have our centre half pairing for the next 3 years. Imagine we dont sign them and end up desperately signing the likes of Zander Diamond!!?!

Arsenal have just signed a young centre half from Charlton who is supposed to be another 'one for the future' plus they are looking at Cahill from Bolton and another so Bartley will be down the picking order unless Wenger fancies him at centre midfield but he wont get in the midfield yet with Wilshire, Song and Ramsey all ahead in the list.

Very wise indeed... ;)

It's so easy to get carried away with transfer rumours, but it's not a particularly good idea to build your hopes up based on rumours then start complaining when it doesn't happen.

Definitely agree with regards to Whittaker. I'd be perfectly happy with us offering him a really good deal and him now earning roughly the same as our other top earners. I've been harsh on him in the past, but I really do think he's important to the team. Players with a good level of skill who can play almost anywhere if asked aren't that easy to come by so I hope we manage to hold onto him. He won't be easy to replace if we were to sell him for a million quid, that's for sure.

If its true he's knocked back our latest offer then I would hold onto him on his current wage rather than sell him for £1 million , at least the current set up sem to see the value of letting players run their contracts down rather than give them away ala Miller , £2million minimum and it also sends a message out to other clubs

one thing on your last sentence rbr, and it makes a lot of sense.

If we keep him and he is on 7k a week, rather than the rejected, supposed, 20k a week, then we "save" about 650k in wages. I agree, in this instance, that it makes sense to hold onto him as we do still need numbers.

Still wouldnt be overly concerned to see him leave.... so long as we can find a suitable replacement !

Problem is, can we rely on players running own their contracts not to effectively down tools?

Whittaker seems a reliable sort but I'd fancy Bougherra may suddenly have passport problems once more.

Just a thought here.... Why don't we just forget about trying to sign Cuellar who's on much higher wages than we can afford and try to buy Kyle Bartley instead?

We had a pretty good look at Bartley this year and all liked what we saw. Maybe we could persuade Arsenal to let him go for a reasonable price that we can afford which would be better than bringing him back on loan because it would be a sound financial investment where 2 or 3 years down the line we'd at least be able to get our money back, but possibly more than we paid.

What do you think? Would Bartley even be interested in signing for us on a permanent deal?

He's said he sees his long term future at Arsenal, and while he loved playing for us, I don't think he'd want to make the switch permanent.

There's also the question that, imo, he's not as good as Cuellar.

That's always going to be a slight worry, but then you'd think that most players running down a contract would still want to do their best, especially when their final season's performance will largely dictate where they move on to and what sort of wage they'll go on to earn when they leave.

That's what I'm thinking too, but you never know. Buying him could certainly prove to be a good investment if it were to happen.

Certainly not as experienced, but he's what? 10 years younger?
