Why not forget about Cuellar and buy Bartley instead?

Recommended Posts

Just a thought here.... Why don't we just forget about trying to sign Cuellar who's on much higher wages than we can afford and try to buy Kyle Bartley instead?

We had a pretty good look at Bartley this year and all liked what we saw. Maybe we could persuade Arsenal to let him go for a reasonable price that we can afford which would be better than bringing him back on loan because it would be a sound financial investment where 2 or 3 years down the line we'd at least be able to get our money back, but possibly more than we paid.

What do you think? Would Bartley even be interested in signing for us on a permanent deal?

Because Wenger wont give them a decision till next month , they want to buy Bartley , and he has stated he would be delighted to come if Arsenal dont want him

There are conflicting media reports. Some say we want to buy Bartley and some say we only want him on loan.

Either way though what we DO know is that Wenger wants to assess him in pre-season - which means we wont know for a month yet as to whether Wenger will let him leave. Given how thin we could be for CB's we cant simply wait for Arsenal to make a decision !

They have offered for him , about £1.5 million , Wenger wants to see him back in training before making a decision , to be honest I dont think we wiill get many players in just now , the madness of the EPL hasn,t fully kicked in and wait and see the last 2 weeks EPL teams will be desperate to get some players out on loan/transferred due to the 25 player rule .

I am not disappointed by losing any targets as yet , if players want to put money over glory they are the wrong type of player for us , we need players who will stick together and fight for each other , sure if a really life changing offer comes in fair enough but to choose the Championship for a few thousand a week is in my view pathetic , and I still stick by my arguement earlier with Bears on twitter the money we pay for reaching the C/L and the win bonuses would more than have made up any shortfall in weekly wages , also I guarentee any player coming to us would pick up very very healthy win bonuses and a damn sight more regularily than in Spain or in the Championship .

ps I posted a very relevant link on Championship wages in the footie chat section well worth a read , the gravy train is slowing down and may soon dissappear

Does that info come from a reliable source mate? If it's true, then I'm really pleased that we're trying to buy him and that's a good first offer. If we were to get him for £1.5m I think that would be an excellent piece of business and he'd be a great addition to the team.

Very true, but we need to get the right balance and could definitely do with one or two additions to the team before the SPL season starts and our first CL qualifier is only 4 days after the first SPL game.

It's not always going to be just about the money though. As I said on the transfer rumours thread, there's going to be players who would rather play in the Championship or whatever rather than move to Scotland just so that they can stay closer to their friends and family. There's only a certain percentage of players who'll be willing to uproot and move to Scotland or leave their family down south while they spend most of their time up here.

Just read that and it's pretty interesting stuff! The 60% wage/income cap sounds like the way for them to go, but I can't see it happening in a hurry when UEFA are going with 70%.

...would be a coup if we got BOTH players, could yet happen.

I really can't see it mate. I can't see us getting Cuellar at all now. Just getting Bartley for between £1.5m to £2m would do me nicely and hopefully leave Ally with enough cash to bring in the other players he thinks we need.

Zappa , re the figure for Bartlay then its as good as it can be mate , however since every other transfer has went south I dont hold out much hope ,in fact till I see them in Murray Park with the strip with their names on I aint believing anything .

We have the basis of a good squad , I believe it's imperative to keep Whittaker , others disagree , but if they dont suppliment the squad soon and injuries kick in as they always do preseason , C/L qualifiers will become 100 times tougher .it's the £17 million pound gamble and we all know how the last one ended

Very wise indeed... ;)

It's so easy to get carried away with transfer rumours, but it's not a particularly good idea to build your hopes up based on rumours then start complaining when it doesn't happen.

Definitely agree with regards to Whittaker. I'd be perfectly happy with us offering him a really good deal and him now earning roughly the same as our other top earners. I've been harsh on him in the past, but I really do think he's important to the team. Players with a good level of skill who can play almost anywhere if asked aren't that easy to come by so I hope we manage to hold onto him. He won't be easy to replace if we were to sell him for a million quid, that's for sure.
