Bougherra to leave this summer after invoking FIFA contract clause says Daily Fail

Recommended Posts

Read the bit in bold gentlemen. Ewing claimed he was going to buy out his deal. He did not say he already had fully done so. The bit in bold says a letter was being prepared, but Rangers hadn't received anything. Just because Rangers haven't received anything, doesn't make the first part a lie.

Bougherra is sending extremely mixed messages - he desperately wants to leave but is trying to avoid it being messy and making enemies. If this report is to be believed, he'll do exactly that if anyone sends a letter to Rangers on his behalf trying to buy himself out.

Fundamentally, at no point does Bougherra deny the letter. The article says he does, but nowhere does he say there's no letter.

The plot thickens...

But he does say "If that doesn't happen this summer, it's not a problem. I can stay for a fourth year but after that I'd want to see new things and try a new challenge."

Which suggests that no letter will be forthcoming. He has a RIGHT to invoke the Webster clause - but he says he will stay a fourth year if need be.

Bougherra might not be even aware of the letter - says his agents are preparing it, that doesnt mean they have made him aware of it. Could just as easily be that they have made him aware that he could invoke the rule and then set about preparing it without his knowledge - of course, they can only SEND it with his permission.

With a year of his contract left and the way he has performed this past season ? Not much more than a million I would say. On previous form, and the way he played at the WC in 2010 we should be looking for about 2 mill for him, which would be higher if he had longer left on his contract.

Only IMHO of course.

I share it.

I'd be genuinely amazed if agents paid by Bougherra set about invoking the Webster clause without even mentioning the idea to him...

Ahhh, but they are setting about invoking the clause, merely prepping the documentation should Bougherra agree to go that route.

They can prepare any letter they like but until and unless it has Bougherra's signature it isnt worth anything. But they will want to have it "good to go" as it would mean getting him on the market quickly as a free agent... which means fees for them.

By that logic every player with a year left on their contract will have agents writing up this letter in 'prep' for being sent should the player choose to invoke it. But this is the first time since the Webster clause arose that I've seen a story about a player possibly using it.

What I am saying is there is no smoke without fire, and I doubt the agents of Bougherra did this of purely their own volition.

We will have to agree to disagree. It is an administration task which agents can prepare prior to the player even thinking about invoking the rule.
