Summer Transfer thread - fun while it lasted!

Arsenal could scupper Rangers’ move for defender Kyle Bartley by insisting he stays in London until the end of the transfer window.

Ibrox boss Ally McCoist is keen to bring the Englishman back to the club after he impressed during a loan spell last season.

His time in Scotland was cut short by injury, but with doubts over the futures of captain David Weir and defensive partner Madjid Bougherra, Bartley has been placed at the top of McCoist’s wanted list. But Gunners manager Arsene Wenger wants to run the rule over the 20-year-old before allowing him to leave the Emirates. Bartley has spent the last 18 months on loan at Sheffield United and Ibrox and the Frenchman believes the time has come for him to prove his worth to the Premiership giants.

Wenger yesterday made his first capture of the close season, with Charlton youngster Carl Jenkinson moving across London.

That deal could hasten Bartley’s exit from the Emirates, but if Wenger stalls on allowing him to leave, McCoist could be forced to look elsewhere as he attempts to build his squad for domestic and European assaults.

The new Gers gaffer is also plotting a swoop for former star Carlos Cuellar, but any move for the Spaniard hinges on Aston Villa appointing a new manager.

McCoist said: “I would be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in a player of Carlos’ quality. The managerial situation at Villa complicates the issue, but as soon as they have made an appointment I’ll be in touch to ask about Carlos’ availability. It will be up to Villa’s new boss to decide if he’s willing to do business.”

McCoist held further talks with owner Craig Whyte last night to plan Rangers’ movements in the transfer market as well as highlighting the need to tie down some of the double-winning stars on long term deals.

The Gers have already opened discussions with Allan McGregor’s representatives over an extended contract and will do likewise with Steven Davis and Steven Whittaker.

Bursaspor yesterday had a bid for Whittaker rejected and are set to come back in, but SportTimes understands the full-back is keen to sort stay at Ibrox. Rangers were today also linked with St Etienne free agent Yohan Benalouane.

A Villa fan I know rates Cuellar as the best CB at Villa.

Basically, it's all dependent on their new manager, whoever that will be, and what they will want to do.

But I reiterate - he left first chance he got, why is he suddenly so keen to come back? Is it because he knows he'll never win anything or play for Spain?

He was quoted yesterday as saying that he left because he was told he had a chance to play for Spain but would need to move in order to do so. He now understands that being capped is unlikely.

One things for sure. it’s BRILLIANT being linked with players instead of us sitting here shitting ourselves we are gonna loose or best players.

It’s been a LONG time coming, even though it can be frustrating

It's nice to be getting linked with all these good players, but there's gonna be a lot of unhappy Bears if all we end up getting in are a few uninspiring cheap options to get our numbers up.

Didn't he just move to Serie A last summer? Contracted for another 3 years.

From FIFA on 31/08/2010

Seems to be some confusion as some think that was only a loan and that he may be a free agent now.

Chap at STV looking into it for me.

You crack that whip mate

Looks like it is indeed a loan accoring to Transfermarkt and Goal.com but both state his contract in France runs longer than 2012.

But I reiterate - he left first chance he got, why is he suddenly so keen to come back? Is it because he knows he'll never win anything or play for Spain?

That's my take on it plus he's now scratched the Premiership itch and getting into his ââ?¬Å?seniorââ?¬Â years.

One of his prime motivations for leaving for England he claims was that his international manager advised him to do so if he wanted to play for Spain. Three years later and he still doesnt have a cap to his name and now hardly playing for his club, his priorities have changed.

He won both cups with Rangers but was denied the championship (by nefarious machinations of a club with no shame) He also played in a UEFA cup final and won two player of the year awards plus Rangers player of the year. He was also put on a pedestal by Rangers fans and was the first name on the team sheet every week.

He must be watching with at least a tinge of envy and regret while Rangers have put together three titles in a row in his absence, as well as taking a domestic cup home each season and playing in the Champions League in two of those years.

Without a move to a top five club, you have to think the only compensation for being where he is, is his larger pay packet and the knowledge hes playing (now and again) in a top European league.

Ive always believed theres fun to be had a Rangers and the remuneration is not exactly breadline stuff. Sometimes it just takes a bit of character to see it and overcome pure money motivation.

Time will tell if Carlos puts his money where his mouth is.
