der Berliner 4,051
With no CL football we'll be lucky if anyone european footballer wants to sign for us, especially one with some ambition in life. Indeed! They rather sign for ... Blackburn, Cardiff, Mallorca and the like. IMHO, we'll use the Bougherra money to sign Juhasz. Davidson and either or both of the Murphys might join up too, for all of them will improve themselves in signing for Rangers. BTW, to some people, playing for this great club is a life's ambition, for they know it will hardly ever become better.

der Berliner 4,051
A lives ambition to play for a club who can't compete in europe? This, with all due respect, is rubbish. Europe starts every season anew and we have every chance to get into the CL on a regular basis. Now check on those teams "our targets" chose and ask for their ambitions. Look at how many EPL teams have managed European Finals during this last decade! And then compare how much money they all had to spend during that time. If it were not for UEFA's favouritism towards the money spinning grand nations of European football, only a handful of German, English, French, Italian or Spanish teams would give you CL football. And they would not barter in the same market like we do. Europe is a bonus. Always has been, always will be. And there will always be times of exultation and times of dispair. But that happens to all teams who play this funny old game. Last night, we were e.g. in the good company of Dynamo Kiev and Panathinaikos Athens ... who are about our standing in the world of European football. calscot 0
It's also got to be said that the team that put us out (and I'd say unluckily so) were the most successful club in Sweden - a country with similar population (although a lot healther) than our own. It's no disgrace when you also consider they are in the middle of their season while we have just started and not even finished putting our squad together. Early knock out competitions are murder as all it takes is a bad performance, a bad referee, a stupid player, a bit of bad luck - or all of those, to put you out. That's exactly why Rangers invented the Champions League - however, the original idea was for all champions to go straight into the league stage. You'd at least think that the top 24 champions would be in there but instead we get this bastardised competition where the five largest and richest countries are pandered to and it's killing the diversity of European football. Perhaps the answer could be a preliminary league where the champions of lower ranked countries fight it out in a qualifying league. But would that be interesting enough to bring in the fans? I hope they try and enforce the Financial fair play because a lot of team would be struggling. PSG and Malaga have Man City type owners so all 3 of them could have problems, there are many others that could be in trouble. I not sure about the exact rules but isn't to do with Turnover to expenditure? Europe is pandered to the big leagues, 3 teams get to go straight into the group stage. This new qualification has helped the lesser nations well except Scotland in all honesty.
ian1964 10,831
Verhoek has signed for Ajax for £1.7m. Another one to add to the 'nearly' list. der Berliner 4,051
ANd I have not seen anything about Verhoek joining Ajax anywhere but on various Rangers boards ... and from dubious sources. He will not have signed for anyone ahead of Den Haag's game tonight.
der Berliner 4,051
STVRaman Raman BhardwajCraig Whyte says there are six offers out there for new players and reckons Rangers may sign two more players by end of this week.
