With all the problems with playing many games in a short time I found this pretty interesting.

During the first world war, concerns about absenteeism from essential services led to a ban on midweek football except on public holidays.

This measure created such problems with fixture congestion in 1917 that many clubs agreed to play two fixtures on the one day in order that the league season might end on the scheduled date of 28th April.

So, on 21st April, Rangers played both Hamilton( a 3.30pm kick-off) and Queens Park(6.45pm). It proved to be a day of mixed fortunes for the club Rangers losing 3-1 at Douglas Park,Hamilton before beating Queens Park( who had won 2-0 at Partick thistle in the afternoon) 1-0 at Ibrox. Both of Rangers games attracted 7000 spectators and seven players turned out on both games for the club: Lock, Manderson, Blair, Lawson, Cairns, Bowie and Anderson.

Extract from The Rangers Miscellany by Robert McElroy.

Now a days two games in three days has them complaining although I will admit the game is far faster and more athletic now than it was in those days.

(I hope I don't need the authors permission to print extracts?)
