Waltersgotstyle 307
That the players are comfortable setting out in a negative formation against teams they feel they could beat? I mean if Walter decides to set up 5-4-1/5-4-1 on Sunday is this not sending out a message to his players that he does not feel they are good enough? Surely this defensive mentality would make one question their own ability when they are constantly told to sit back?
Gribz 919
Im not sure if he is sending a message to all the players but if I was Ness or Hutton Id be wondering why Edu and Whittaker were ahead in the pecking order when the former 2 have done better. Some are making the excuse for WS to set up defensively as PSV are tactially better than us...but to set up 5-4-1 against Celtic plus sit back when leading them with an extra man says more about WS tactics than his thoughts on the players. We should never fear Celtic.
Frankie 8,665
Yeah, I think the defensive mentality is affecting a few players. Last night Davis was 10x the player he was in the first half by being allowed to get further forward.
calscot 0
I think the problem of our small squad means that when we have injuries, we don't quite have the personnel to perform this formation well, especially compared to three years ago. With the loss of Miller and Jelavic being cup-tied, we also don't really have anyone adept at the single striker role. David and Edu just don't have the grit in central midfield necessary - and ironically Davis was better in this formation when he played on the right. More ironically, it seems we miss the much maligned McCulloch for this role. However, our biggest problem is that our defence can no longer cope. Weir is now too old for this level, Bougherra and Papac are both out of sorts this season and our right back role has only been filled sporadically. When you add all that up, we just don't have the players anymore. If we did, I'm sure the tactics would not affect their confidence in the slightest. Saying that, we still went out at the same stage as Man City, Liverpool, Zenit, Ajax and more. With our finances, it says something for the tactics and formation.
